Growler from Bierkraft in Schlenkerla glass. Reddish brown with lasting beige head. Very smoky woodsmoke and toasted caramel aroma. Smoky toasted caramel brown sugar with lager grassiness and lingering mild bitterness. Medium body and medium carbo. Very clean and very smoky, but still the toasted caramel of the malts and the hop bitterness come through beautiful. Ok, I’ve been waiting a couple of years to try this one, and it is awesome. I thought it would be my first 5, but I’m not sure it’s actually better than the marzen, which has less lingering bitterness. I will have to decide whether this or the marzen will be my first 5. Anyhow, I think I need to move to Bamberg.

Deep plum color with a fairly white head. Aroma of awesome white oak smoke. Smooth palate almost creamy but not because there’s enough carbonation to avoid that abomination. Only during whatever.. I’m drinking this in June.

Keg at Marciero. Never thought I would get to drink my #1 wanted beer in Osaka! Deep dark brown with reddish orange tints, low fine head quickly gets lacy. Great nose: smoke, bacon, caramel, some chocolate, orange. Amazingly drinkable beer, rather sweet but no where near cloying, medium smoke (less than their Marzen), caramel, chocolate, light hops with orange and grass. Prefect body, light but full and smooth and low carbonation. Wonderful beer, the best I have had from them.

Tap: Finally able to try this one after a long time spent tracking it down. Beautiful copper-y, red-tinted body with only mild clarity; a thick, foamy, ecru cap sits softly on top, almost showing the same light red tint as the beer below it. Aroma is lovely, lovely smoke! Mild meat-y, bacon-like smoke with undertones of charred campfire wood, toasted nuts, & a hint of sweet liquid smoke. Time opens up some more modest malt notes; caramely & woodsy. Smooth, smoked sausage over a campfire on the palate, the smoke transfers excellently to the taste. Both sweet & smoked with very nice balance. Successive sips reveal more malt complexity; toasted nuts, caramel, wood chips, hickory. Notable earthy, slender hop bite on the back of each sip. A masterful smoked beer, there’s a reason these guys are "the ones who do the smoked beers". Delicious in every sense of the word.

Tap @ The Beer Mongers for 4:20 Smoke and Dank Beer Fest... Poured deep brownish/mohagony with a thin, retaining, khaki head. Aroma of campfire smoke, and charred sugars. Nice smokiness and ashy grains with a mild mouthfeel. Charred wood and toasted sugars. Clean and smokey from start to finish. Cream of the crop when it comes to Rauchbiers.
