The Original Schlenkerla Lentbeer is an unfiltered smokebeer, brewed according to the Bavarian Purity Law of 1516. Bottom-fermenting yeast gives the reddish brown lentbeer a natural cloudiness. Its smokey aroma is already noticeable in the smell, combined with a fine hoppy note. In the drink the fullbodied, highly drinkable lentbeer shows its strong malty flavour, rounded up with the smokey taste and a light bitterness. Due to the nourishing yeast, the Original Schlenkerla Lentbeer has the "Brotzeit already included" (German word for afternoon snack). Served / Sold: - Only during lent from Ash Wednesday to Easter - Only from the wooden keg at the Schlenkerla Data: Original Gravity: 14.5% Alcohol: 5.5% EBU: 32

Growler from Bierkraft in Schlenkerla glass. Reddish brown with lasting beige head. Very smoky woodsmoke and toasted caramel aroma. Smoky toasted caramel brown sugar with lager grassiness and lingering mild bitterness. Medium body and medium carbo. Very clean and very smoky, but still the toasted caramel of the malts and the hop bitterness come through beautiful. Ok, I’ve been waiting a couple of years to try this one, and it is awesome. I thought it would be my first 5, but I’m not sure it’s actually better than the marzen, which has less lingering bitterness. I will have to decide whether this or the marzen will be my first 5. Anyhow, I think I need to move to Bamberg.

Possibly the last of the wobbly men I will get to try unless I pick my arse up and get back to the bräu Heller-trum anytime soon. Alongside the rest this just is an absolute stand-alone pleasure to drink. It looks good, feels good, yields a heady waft and drinks like an elixir. Settles a ruby chestnut, misted by proteins in suspension. A lofty, off-white head gets comfortable atop and laces a feverish film of foam in its wake. Aroma? Absolutely amazing. Perfektionieren is the robust nose offering hints of Cheetoh’s™ and Burger Rings™ crisps, smoked bacon and peat-charred beef, bonfire smoke, spiced Biltong and a strange inkling of fresh made, salty tapenade. A little tart berries on the palate deepen the complexity yet simplicity of this beer. It is light and racy across the tongue. The aroma is just a plug for all that grips the olfactories on and in the swallow. Smoked meat, charcuterie, peat, ash and a good whack of green peppercorns (?) give it spice and substance to draw at the saliva glands and refresh the palate. Overall it is dry but drinks like a liquor the body simply needs. I loved this little gem. Another wobbly man to savour here on our shores in Oz. Lovely!!! Aecht Schlenkerla Fastenbier has a thick, creamy, beige head, a semi-clear, amber appearance, with lots of powdery sediment, throughout, some splotchy lacing left on the glass, and visible bubble streams. Aroma is of smoked turkey or pork with a Busch Signature Copper Lager, under-note. Taste is of sweet, white bread, smoke, smoke, smoke, malt, low-level hop bitterness, and smoke. Mouthfeel is high-light (just like Busch Signature Copper Lager), and Aecht Schlenkerla Fastenbier finishes surprisingly crisp and not surprisingly smoky. RJT

Tap at Cask Republic. Straight outta Bamberg, crazy motha ... Anyway, this kicks ass. Smells like smoked bacon. Huge. Murky deep amber pour. White soapy head. Easy drinking. Brilliant.

Bottle, 9C at first which was far too cold but I didn’t mind sniffing and sipping for a while as it opened up. Deep cloudy red with a large off white head that fades but laces well. Rich smoke and sticky bread crusts. Slight cheese as well as glazed ham Doesn’t smell as sweet as the Marzen. Light bodied but with firm bready malt that comes though despite the big smoke. Likewise, peppery bitterness at the end shines though nicely. Quality.
