The Original Schlenkerla Lentbeer is an unfiltered smokebeer, brewed according to the Bavarian Purity Law of 1516. Bottom-fermenting yeast gives the reddish brown lentbeer a natural cloudiness. Its smokey aroma is already noticeable in the smell, combined with a fine hoppy note. In the drink the fullbodied, highly drinkable lentbeer shows its strong malty flavour, rounded up with the smokey taste and a light bitterness. Due to the nourishing yeast, the Original Schlenkerla Lentbeer has the "Brotzeit already included" (German word for afternoon snack). Served / Sold: - Only during lent from Ash Wednesday to Easter - Only from the wooden keg at the Schlenkerla Data: Original Gravity: 14.5% Alcohol: 5.5% EBU: 32

Growler from Bierkraft in Schlenkerla glass. Reddish brown with lasting beige head. Very smoky woodsmoke and toasted caramel aroma. Smoky toasted caramel brown sugar with lager grassiness and lingering mild bitterness. Medium body and medium carbo. Very clean and very smoky, but still the toasted caramel of the malts and the hop bitterness come through beautiful. Ok, I’ve been waiting a couple of years to try this one, and it is awesome. I thought it would be my first 5, but I’m not sure it’s actually better than the marzen, which has less lingering bitterness. I will have to decide whether this or the marzen will be my first 5. Anyhow, I think I need to move to Bamberg.

UPDATED: APR 29, 2016 16.9 oz. bottle poured into glass. Pours a murkyish brown, almost a cola color, with a thick khaki head. One of the fuller bodied heads that lingers for a tad too long. Smells of burnt chicory, smoked meat, and a fire pit, all with some sweet malt hiding in the back. Tastes of sweet caramel on the tongue, nice and malty. Then WHAM!! Holy shit it tastes like kielbasa. Meaty, fatty, smoke, garlic, pepper, finished with a maltiness left on the tongue. Very unique...odd but I oddly dig it.

Bottle. Dark Amber color. Malt and smoked ham in the aroma. Malty sweetish flavor. Full bodied. Smoked ham and beechwood in the flavor. Very well balanced. Great beer.

Ok this style is nothing for my taste. Aroma is smoked ham and nothing really else. Taste is more or less bitter and I think I am tasting salt. As a vegetarian for years I can’t get around the ham aroma somehow. Very sad, that I don’t like, what seems to be one of the best of its style.

Pours a hazy dark ruby/amber with a busy light tan head. Aroma is like walking into a smokehouse, along with some dark fruit. Taste is sweet caramel malt, buttered toasted biscuits, spices, smoked grain, prunes, and a little hop bitterness to round it out. Very interesting, chewy, delicious.

Tap @ mikkeller Aarhus. Pours amber with an off white head. Aroma is obviously very smoked with notes of caramel malts and some grain in the background. Also some corn and a weak smoky cheesy note. The taste is sweet and smoky with notes of caramel, dark grains, corn, cheese and caramel. One of the better smoked beers I have had but this style is just not for me I guess.

Draft at Fountainhead in Chicago. The aroma in Neuskies Bacon. Bitter, smoky, ashy, woody, bacony, scotchy. Smoke rides into the far finish. Fantastic flavors, but one a decade would be enough for me.

Hazy, deep amber to brown colored with ruby hue, medium beige frothy head, nice lacing. Aroma is of some caramel, malt, moderate+ smoked ham and sausage aroma, some bread, light wood. Taste is medium+ sweet malt, caramel, smoked ham, bread with sausage, light+ bitterness, some light wood. Medium+ bodied, soft carbonation, oily to creamy. Excellent stuff, easy drinking and full of beautiful smoked meat flavor. (bottle, Pivoteka Zagreb)

Keg at The Port Street Beer House, Manchester. A clear brown colour with a thick beige head. Aroma of smoked meat, smoked wood, some caramel, slight chocolate, a little nuts and subtle citrus in there. Taste of smoked meats, caramel, wood, some chocolate, slight nuts, a little dark fruits and subtle herbal, citrusy hops. Medium bodied and moderate carbonation. A long, dry, smoked and fruity bitterness in the finish. What a cracking smoked beer, similar to the marzen but lighter, fruitier with a subtle hop presence. Lovely.
