4.8 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20
Growler from Bierkraft in Schlenkerla glass. Reddish brown with lasting beige head. Very smoky woodsmoke and toasted caramel aroma. Smoky toasted caramel brown sugar with lager grassiness and lingering mild bitterness. Medium body and medium carbo. Very clean and very smoky, but still the toasted caramel of the malts and the hop bitterness come through beautiful. Ok, I’ve been waiting a couple of years to try this one, and it is awesome. I thought it would be my first 5, but I’m not sure it’s actually better than the marzen, which has less lingering bitterness. I will have to decide whether this or the marzen will be my first 5. Anyhow, I think I need to move to Bamberg.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
draught at Zly Casy, Prague. Amber-copper colour, creamy beige head. Lovely intensive smoke aroma. Medium-bodied, intensive malty base with a good amount of smoke, pleasantly hoppy which ads a spicy touch. Delicious stuff!

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
On tap at Yards’ smoke beer event. Aroma was slight meat and caramel. Pours bronze with a nice lager head. Taste is sweet with caramel, biscuit, smoked meat, root beer and leather. All in all, a very easy rauchbier to quaff down.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
It’s like drinking a sigar. Beer is slightly bitter with some yeasty sweetness. But the dominant taste is of course the intense, face-filling explosion of smoke. Sehr gut!

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Draft at Redlight. Deep ruby pour with a bubbly white head. Big hickory smoke aroma, ash, wood with a nutty and toffee malt backing. Flavor is very balanced with barbeque sauce, hickory wood, sweet malty backing. Smooth drinking palate with moderate carbonation. I love this.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Keg at British Craft Beer Challenge. These Schlenkerla’s are all quite samey (not necessarily a bad thing), deep brown colour, smokey nose, clean malt background, notes of bacon and maple syrup, well balanced bitterness to finish. This is perhaps less aggressively smoked than others, more drinkable. Very pleasant.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Draught at Breukelen Bier Merchants NYC. Pours brown clear some lace after a dissipating head. Aroma is delicious smoke, bbq spice, light red fruit. Flavor is a perfect balance of those over moderate sweetness and bitterness. The finish is woody and smoky. The feel is lively, dense full and heavy. Super awesome.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap at Churchkey. Poured crimson red with small beige head which dissapates quickly. Aroma is nice smoke, little lacing, light body, and low carbonation. Taste is nice smoke and some meat. Not a lot a flavor, but quality and enjoyable. I remember liking Aecht Weizen better.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Keg at Euston Tap. Easy drinkable beer despite the smokeyness and the dark brown color. Body is thin and mauthfeel is dry. Lightly hoppy and smoky nose. Palate is pleasant with a strong smoked finish. A bit weak and disappointing given the high rating.

3.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Tap: Poured a clear light maple color ale with a small foamy head with average retention. Aroma consists of smoked malt with light woody notes and floral undertones. Taste is dominated by easy drinking notes of smoked malt with light wood notes and floral undertones. Body is full with somewhat of a fat mouthfeel with medium carbonation. Great mix between complexity and drinkability.
