COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Original Schlenkerla Lentbeer is an unfiltered smokebeer, brewed according to the Bavarian Purity Law of 1516. Bottom-fermenting yeast gives the reddish brown lentbeer a natural cloudiness. Its smokey aroma is already noticeable in the smell, combined with a fine hoppy note. In the drink the fullbodied, highly drinkable lentbeer shows its strong malty flavour, rounded up with the smokey taste and a light bitterness. Due to the nourishing yeast, the Original Schlenkerla Lentbeer has the "Brotzeit already included" (German word for afternoon snack). Served / Sold: - Only during lent from Ash Wednesday to Easter - Only from the wooden keg at the Schlenkerla Data: Original Gravity: 14.5% Alcohol: 5.5% EBU: 32

Growler from Bierkraft in Schlenkerla glass. Reddish brown with lasting beige head. Very smoky woodsmoke and toasted caramel aroma. Smoky toasted caramel brown sugar with lager grassiness and lingering mild bitterness. Medium body and medium carbo. Very clean and very smoky, but still the toasted caramel of the malts and the hop bitterness come through beautiful. Ok, I’ve been waiting a couple of years to try this one, and it is awesome. I thought it would be my first 5, but I’m not sure it’s actually better than the marzen, which has less lingering bitterness. I will have to decide whether this or the marzen will be my first 5. Anyhow, I think I need to move to Bamberg.

Bottle @ Don’t want anything to do with carnaval tasting. Nice dark amber color, full sized rough beige head. Smell and taste malts, smoke, rauchmalts, moderately sweet and lightly bitter. Decent to medium body and carbonation. Very balanced, but you’ve got to like smoked beers.

At a tasting, many thanks Erzengel, small stable bubbly head, clear very dark d color, distinctive smokey schlenlkerla aroma, slightly more intense then the regular version, mellow and aromatic with some charred wood in the back, flavor of smokey sausage with caramel, dark bread and charred wood in the back, maybe just a tad light bodied. Very good and highly enjoyable.

Clear reddish brown with a large, slowly dissipating, off-white head. Aroma is malty with some toffee, dark bread, a good amount of smoked meat with hints of burnt wood. Taste is medium sweet, smokey and soft bitter. Finish is soft bitter with light floral and spicy touch, sweet toffee, bread and smoked meat. Medium bodied, slight creamy, soft to average carbonation.

Bottle bought @ systembolaget. pours hazy deep dark brown with a rather small frothy goldenish beige head that slowly dissipates while leaving some thick lacing on the glass: Smell is malty, slightly floral and smokey with pumpernickel bread, caramel, burnt toast, charred wood, smoked charcutries, hay, moist soil, minerals and hints of cocoa. Taste is tiny sweet, bitter, malty, slightly smokey and floral. Mouthfeel is crisp, slightly dry, tiny astringent and medium bodied. Finish is tiny sweet and bitter with wholegrain crackers, dark bread, caramel, burnt toast, charred wood, smoked charcutries, hay, moist soil, minerals, chocolate and liquorice. Extremely elegant and drinkable smoked beer. Not in any way a big beer but presented with great balance and craftmanship. Probably far better fresh on cask which is something I hope to experience in the future but this, in its current shape, is amazing as is.

zizzybalubba (1736) - Raleigh, North Carolina, USA - NOV 23, 2015
500 mL bottle from The Hop Yard, Raleigh. Muddy brown pour with a frothy off-white head. Aroma of campfire, smoked meats, and roasted malt. Taste is very smoke forward but subtle ripe banana and bubblegum flavors manage to find their place. Finishes with some sweetness but the smoke lingers on the palate. Pairs perfectly with strong cheeses and charcuterie. It took me some time to warm up to the Heller brewed rauchbiers but I am hooked. This is another stunning selection.

A deep dark brown orange color with a light tan colored rim. An oily topping in the end. Big smoke aroma very meaty with a fresh clean nose. Big smokey flavor with a dry back feel.
