3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: MAR 20, 2016 Tap at Bavarian Lodge. Dark brown, iced tea color with a thin, clingy ring of foam. Smell of Gouda cheese that marks all Schenklera beers. First sip offers some big malts, but those are immediately swallowed up by the house smoked malt with the Gouda rind taste. But for a smoked beer, that’s exactly what I expected, and I ordered it because that’s just what I like.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Appearance: hazy medium amber with one finger of creamy ivory head, excellent retention and moderate lacing. (4/5) Aroma: hardwood smoke, caramel malt, savoury meat. (8/10) Taste: moderate smoke, moderate sweet, mild bitter. (8/10) Medium body, moderate carbonation, off-dry smoky finish. (4/5)
Mmm... Bacon-y! A very pleasant, easy-drinking Rauchbier, with strong but not overwhelming smokiness. I’m really starting to appreciate Rauchbiers in general and the Aecht Schlenkerla lineup more specifically, and this is quite a nice example. The smokiness in particular is very well implemented, and comes across more as bacon curing (i.e. hardwood) than campfire (i.e. softwood). In fact, this might be an excellent place for neophytes to begin exploring Rauchbiers, given the overall quite mellow character. (16/20)

5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20
This is a wonderful beer. Nice sized head with a strong aroma. The smoked taste really lasts in your mouth and pressures you to have another sip. This beer may not be for everyone but if you love different types of beers then I think you should try it. It pairs well in my opinion with Dorito’s Bold BBQ nacho chips or Ruffles Bacon & Sour Cream potato chips.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottled. Dark amber color with medium sized white/light brownish head. Quite malty with strong sweet barbecue ham smoke finish. Malty sweetness is dominant. Although it has nice aroma, I expected more flavors. So yea quite medium flavored smoked beer.

Possibly the last of the wobbly men I will get to try unless I pick my arse up and get back to the bräu Heller-trum anytime soon. Alongside the rest this just is an absolute stand-alone pleasure to drink. It looks good, feels good, yields a heady waft and drinks like an elixir. Settles a ruby chestnut, misted by proteins in suspension. A lofty, off-white head gets comfortable atop and laces a feverish film of foam in its wake. Aroma? Absolutely amazing. Perfektionieren is the robust nose offering hints of Cheetoh’s™ and Burger Rings™ crisps, smoked bacon and peat-charred beef, bonfire smoke, spiced Biltong and a strange inkling of fresh made, salty tapenade. A little tart berries on the palate deepen the complexity yet simplicity of this beer. It is light and racy across the tongue. The aroma is just a plug for all that grips the olfactories on and in the swallow. Smoked meat, charcuterie, peat, ash and a good whack of green peppercorns (?) give it spice and substance to draw at the saliva glands and refresh the palate. Overall it is dry but drinks like a liquor the body simply needs. I loved this little gem. Another wobbly man to savour here on our shores in Oz. Lovely!!! 4.7 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20
Aecht Schlenkerla Fastenbier has a thick, creamy, beige head, a semi-clear, amber appearance, with lots of powdery sediment, throughout, some splotchy lacing left on the glass, and visible bubble streams. Aroma is of smoked turkey or pork with a Busch Signature Copper Lager, under-note. Taste is of sweet, white bread, smoke, smoke, smoke, malt, low-level hop bitterness, and smoke. Mouthfeel is high-light (just like Busch Signature Copper Lager), and Aecht Schlenkerla Fastenbier finishes surprisingly crisp and not surprisingly smoky. RJT
