COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
“Schlenkerla Helles” is brewed with fine Bavarian aroma hops from the area around the city of Nürnberg. It’s lagered in century old caves underneath the historic Schlenkerla brewery and maltings. Schlenkerla Helles is boiled in the same copper kettles and bottom fermented by the same yeast as the historic Schlenkerla Smokebeer. Its subtle smokiness without using smoke malt makes “Helles Schlenkerla Lager” a unique representative of the classic lager beer style “Bavarian Helles”. Editor’s note: Since this is not intended as a smoked beer, and is not billed as such, it has been classed here as a Helles, despite some samples having residual smoke character.

500 ml. bottle @ home. Procured from Dranken Geers. BBF 12/2014 (so not very fresh anymore sadly). Enjoyed with sour cabbage, greens, potato’s & tofu sausage in the spirit of things. Super crystal clear golden with a small, solid white head. Lacing is exceptional. Textbook appearance. Nose is grainy lager nose, faint corn sweetness, mmm… Taste is better luckily. Light sweet grains, honey sweet, tad corn sweet, clean, touch more sweet than crisp, sugar, finish has a faint note of smoke that quickly seems to disappear from the picture, making a minor reassurance from time to time but you have to really look for it. Faintly grainy, oily lager body. Crazily easy to drink. It is good for what it is but I might had too high expectations considering that this is Schlenkerla after all. I have to say by the end of the bottle I found myself wishing that I had another one. At a good price point if available locally to me, I can see myself drinking a lot of it. A great accomplishment for a brewery to make a costumer feel that way about their beer. One that I believe German breweries in general work towards.

500mL bottle, pours a clear pale blonde with a small white head. Aroma is classic spicy lager yeast, light herbal notes and grass. Flavour is very pleasant, with herbal notes, light spiciness, and a light grassy hops. Everything a helles should be. Perfectly balanced, with a great herbal spiciness. Great stuff.

500ml bottle served in a weizen glass.A: Pours an absolutely clear yellow color forming a medium to small head with low retention and lots of thin and lingering spotty lacings in the glass. S: Nose is the classic malty and crispy German Lager. Strong notes of sweet pale malts and flowery hops. Some metallic and ashy notes too. T: Slightly sweet pale malts in the upfront becoming dry and crispy with a considerable hop bitterness in the end. Notes of grassy hops. Hints of ashes and roasted malts.M: Very light body. Medium but persistent carbonation. Grassy bitterness in the aftertaste. O: Great drinkability. Refreshing. Excellent German Lager.

Yellow with a heavy haze, a cm of nice white had that fades to a soapy film and ring. Aroma is sweet, wet hay and pleasant smoke in the background, like that which silently wafts from neighbors on a cold winter evening. Body is medium-light, watery-syrupy, medium-light carbonation, just a bit of fine pricks. Flavor is light sweet grain (not malt or wheat, more like corn and hay) with light, delicate smokiness, maybe a hint of rye and tree bitterness. Incredibly quaffable, balanced, moderately complex, and yummy. Deserving of the label "Helles" over "Smoked".

Bottle. Clear golden body with a thin white head. Lively carbonation. Light lacing. Aroma of rhubarb, sliced pear, grass and white bread. Flavour of lightly smoked malt, apple pie and a finish of lightly smoked cheese. Thin body with a watery, slightly oily mouthfeel. Light fizz. Certainly one of the most unique Lagers I’ve ever tried.
