COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
“Schlenkerla Helles” is brewed with fine Bavarian aroma hops from the area around the city of Nürnberg. It’s lagered in century old caves underneath the historic Schlenkerla brewery and maltings. Schlenkerla Helles is boiled in the same copper kettles and bottom fermented by the same yeast as the historic Schlenkerla Smokebeer. Its subtle smokiness without using smoke malt makes “Helles Schlenkerla Lager” a unique representative of the classic lager beer style “Bavarian Helles”. Editor’s note: Since this is not intended as a smoked beer, and is not billed as such, it has been classed here as a Helles, despite some samples having residual smoke character.

500ml bottle. Clear golden body with a tall white head, that hangs in there on it’s way down. Aromas of light bread and some grass gently wrapped in a campfire smoke with a meaty presence. A touch of floral notes in the background. Flavor is similar, followed by a brief distinct grassy bitterness that bites off. Easy to drink, yet complex. Accompanied well with beef jerky.

Bottle. Almost clear deep golden liquid with medium white head. Aroma of bread, smoke, smoked sausage, grain, floral hops, earth and bonfire. Taste is very light sweet and light to medium bitter with notes of bread, toast and smoke. Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Great combination of a helles and a Rauchbier. Under the smoke, there’s a beautiful, balanced, hoppy base. Great stuff!

50 cl bottle from Systembolaget. Golden yellow with white head. Aroma of grass, smoked sausage, ashes, herbs, malts, bread. Woody/smoky flavours, crispy end. Better than i thought, balanced, clean and the smokiness is not too much.

(500ml bottle from Systembolaget) Pours clear gold with a small white head that leaves lace. Aroma is rather crisp pale malt, slightly sweet with a touch of bread, smoky quality, leather, grass, lightly herbal. Flavour has a light malt body with a bit of cereals and honey to it. Moderate smoke and wood, leather, slight cured meat, grass, floral, slightly spicy hop bitterness, all of which ramp up slightly towards a dry, lightly bitter, semi-crisp finish. Rather light bodied, carbonation is quite prickling. Interesting beverage, the second-hand smoke character is quite clear and gives a layer of interest to a relatively simple noble-hopped lager. Fun to try and reasonably drinkable.

Golden yellow color, medium white head. Bread malt aromas, yeast, spices. Slight bitter, smoke, malt, bread and ’dirt’ tasting. Finish and taste feels a bit off, like unwashed root crops.

Pours a crystal clear, bright golden color, with a huge, stable white head. Smells of wet straw, soft hay and a light herbal whiff. A cakey malt profile gets recognizable among the more pronounced garden herb qualities. Has a light, well nuanced mouthfeel with a medium carbonation, slighly bubbly during the mid palate, with a calmer, malt focussed finish and a herbal dryness prevailing. Tastes of sun dried straw, gently accompanied by garden herbs and a lingering, subtle dough malt profile. A pleasant leaf dryness comes up during the mid palate, finishing with an aqueous softness, guided by slighty sweeter toffee malts. Wow, this is masterfully balanced with a very enjoyable, well nuanced hop presence, making this very refreshing. For me, ligher beers’ most important quality is their balance, since its got to be clean brewed or it becomes a mess, and this one is a winner.
