mtoast (290), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Feb 10, 2008 Bottle courtesy of yinzer at Pittsburgh gathering on 1/27/08. Pours a very light golden color with stark white foam, great lacing and retention. Somewhat restrained smokiness for a Schlenkerla, some nice light maltiness and German hop aroma also. Flavor is nice and crisp with some nice bacon like smokiness. It’s like a great Helles that was dry hopped with bacon, good stuff. pantani (1894), Salinas, California, USA Feb 3, 2008 Gold with a thin white head. Aroma is is lightly malty, very light smokiness with a light sweetness. Taste is very interesting, a light smoke accents the helles side of the beer, with some floral showing. Definantly interesting. cheapdark (2011), Monacatootha, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 31, 2008 Had the pleasure of sampling this at the 1/27/2008 Pittsburgh ratebeer.com gathering and festival upstairs, Sharp Edge Creekhouse. It will be a long time, if ever I am invited again and I see a spread of bottles like I did there - ever again. I am not good enough for the beers that were that we sampled! For example, how about this beer, the prime example of smoke from yinzer! Aroma of fine honey glazed ham or sweet pie! Almost sickening in olfactory sweetness. Attractive like it must be for a bee to a beatiful flower! Look is very clear pale yellow. Barely any carbonation. taste is more woody than smoky. Vanilla at times. Very very unique, difficult and meaty! Thanks Mark, glad to have had the chancce to try this! Nate (2533), Indiana, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 30, 2008 Sampled at the RBPG; bottle courtesy of yinzer. The aroma of this particular beer from this brewery is perfectly described by two words: smoked honey. Pours clear golden with a thin white head. Medium bodied with light carbonation. This is a fairly simple lager, with a dry light maltiness that’s not really complex. Unlike some of the other beers from this line, the smoked meat taste is not overpowering, but rather you’re left with some smoky honey notes. It’s light, tasty, and in no way overpowering when compared to the others. A bit thin, but nice. LinusStick (1831), Moon Twp, suburb of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 28, 2008 No brewer does smoke like Brauerei Heller-Trum. Being based on a helles I knew it wouldn’t be as strong as their others. Aroma was nice. Smoke and not much else. Pour was a light gold with a white ring for a head. Taste was bland (as I consider a helles to be) with not much coming to the front other than the mild smokiness. I like my smokes so strong that I cough after a sip. Good but not great. zebracakes (1214), Washington DC, USA Jan 28, 2008 Bottle sampled at the Ratebeer meet-up 01.27.08 at the Sharp Edge Creekhouse. Beer courtesy of Yinzer.
Pale yellow with white head. Aroma is malt, honey, ham. Flavor is the same and smoky but has a weak body. This was dubbed "liquid bacon" or "bacon grease," I can’t quite remember the exactly wording. Personally I would have preferred more of a bacon flavor. :) waolsen (1220), Littleton, Colorado, USA Jan 20, 2008 bottle. golden pour, carbonated with clarity. almost no head. sweet grains, wheat, yeasts and caramel malts in aroma. flavor is much the same iwth some rice and mild hops. dry mouth. texture a bit of syrup. Drink4Satan (585), Bristol, Rhode Island, USA Jan 17, 2008 Pours a crystal clear straw colour with a large puffy white head, quickly reducing to a sudsy film. The nose is muted and uninspiring, with floral, saaz hops, honey, corriander and a whisper of smoked malt. The flavour brings out the smokiness of the brew, but its dominated mostly by floral hops and honey-sweet malts. There is an herbal, almost medicinal mid-palate flavour profile. The body is thin and the mouthfeel is sharp, watery and crisp. Dissapointing.
