COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
“Schlenkerla Helles” is brewed with fine Bavarian aroma hops from the area around the city of Nürnberg. It’s lagered in century old caves underneath the historic Schlenkerla brewery and maltings. Schlenkerla Helles is boiled in the same copper kettles and bottom fermented by the same yeast as the historic Schlenkerla Smokebeer. Its subtle smokiness without using smoke malt makes “Helles Schlenkerla Lager” a unique representative of the classic lager beer style “Bavarian Helles”. Editor’s note: Since this is not intended as a smoked beer, and is not billed as such, it has been classed here as a Helles, despite some samples having residual smoke character.

Review based on the BJCP2015 guidelines (style 32A). Bottle 50 cl - Batch LAC. AROMA: a forward smoke aroma, just to offset a grainy-malty background and almost in balance. hop aromas not perceptible. APPEARANCE: pale gold color and translucent. average creamy white head with good retention. TASTE: initial sweet malt flavor with a grainy character, mixed with a moderate smokiness. restrained medium-low bitterness with a semi-dry and slight smoky finish. good balance. clean lager profile. PALATE: medium-low body with moderate carbonation. OVERALL: a nice munich helles with a balanced smoky twist.

Golden color. Big, white head . Bread , herbs , malt and gentle touch of smoke in aroma. Malt and bread dominate in taste. Crisp and refreshing.

Crisp and refreshing like a good lager but with a healthy dose of smoke. Bit of smokey bacon on the nose and trip that no smoked malts were used to brew this. One of the best from the brewery. Not as fierce as the others yet the dangerously drinkable.

Bottle at home. Clear golden orange with a white head. Aroma of smoked malts, toffee, light butterscotch, malt, light leathery notes and a little metallic. Flavour is a over moderate sweet and above light bitter. Light to medium bodied with soft carbonation.

Clear golden color with a nice foamy head. Aroma yeasty, bready, and smokey. Not as smokey as other offerings from this brewery. But it there. Taste bready, smokey, and a but metallic. As a Helles, it’s mediocre, since the smoke covers up the delicate flavors that distinguish a good Helles. As a smoked beer it’s ok - not as smokey as others, but I think that’s an advantage.

Bottle. Pale golden body, small head. Aroma has a small hint of ham and leather but nothing overbearing. Taste is generally light with a notable but still not overly strong leathery smokiness. Pretty light finish with a subtle smokiness. It’s decent but I expected a fuller body and more intense smokiness. Definitely a nice lager but not as memorable as their Märzen.
