COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
“Schlenkerla Helles” is brewed with fine Bavarian aroma hops from the area around the city of Nürnberg. It’s lagered in century old caves underneath the historic Schlenkerla brewery and maltings. Schlenkerla Helles is boiled in the same copper kettles and bottom fermented by the same yeast as the historic Schlenkerla Smokebeer. Its subtle smokiness without using smoke malt makes “Helles Schlenkerla Lager” a unique representative of the classic lager beer style “Bavarian Helles”. Editor’s note: Since this is not intended as a smoked beer, and is not billed as such, it has been classed here as a Helles, despite some samples having residual smoke character.

Pours a straw color with a puffy off Greyish colored head. Notes of ammonia, grass, smoke, and honey. Astringent finish. Nope.

50 cl bottle @ home, BBE 01/2012
Aroma is slightly stale with grain and butter. Flavour has grassy hops, some grain, hints of smoke and gooseberry bush in the dryish finish. The hops actually disturb a bit, maybe this hop variety is just not for me. A helles with extra hops.

500 ml bottle.
Pours a golden colour without a head. Large visible bubbles. Aroma of grainy malts, grass with some weak smoke notes. Flavour of rich grainy malts, grassy bitter hops, citrus with some light honey-like sweetness. Medium bodied, thick mouthfeel and a bitter, malty, grainy finish. One bitter Helles, good.

My bottle was on sale, so perhaps that’s a sign that it wasn’t at its best. Aroma is vaguely skunked - not smoky, but now I see that it isn’t really supposed to be. Nice looker: clear straw, good head. Subtle smokiness? Perhaps, but otherwise a mediocre helles. A bit grassy.

500ml Bottle. Appearance is darkish-orange color with medium, off-white head. Aroma is grainy, malty, with some citrus. Taste is similar with dough, grainy malts, general sweetness with some lemongrass. Very little bitterness. Palate is medium-bodied, slick texture, average carbonation, and a short, sweet finish.

16.9 oz bottle. Clear straw with a puffy white head. Nose is dough, light lemon and a touch of toffee. Medium light but plenty substantial for a lager. Carb is bright but soft. Taste is grass, honey, white pepper, clover and citrus pith. Clean, very drinkable, but perhaps a bit bland.

Bottle... Poured clear, pale golden with a white head. I had this in the past and remember it having more residual smoke flavors then now. This time it was very faint with mostly a cracker malt graininess and sweetness coming though. Some floral hops, and a clean lager yeast character. A little bit of light fruits, toasted grains. As the glass warmed some charred smoke-like flavors came through.
