COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
“Schlenkerla Helles” is brewed with fine Bavarian aroma hops from the area around the city of Nürnberg. It’s lagered in century old caves underneath the historic Schlenkerla brewery and maltings. Schlenkerla Helles is boiled in the same copper kettles and bottom fermented by the same yeast as the historic Schlenkerla Smokebeer. Its subtle smokiness without using smoke malt makes “Helles Schlenkerla Lager” a unique representative of the classic lager beer style “Bavarian Helles”. Editor’s note: Since this is not intended as a smoked beer, and is not billed as such, it has been classed here as a Helles, despite some samples having residual smoke character.

Lookout is regular lager - clear, golden with small white top. Old basement comes up with aroma as well as some musty clothes and stale stuff. Taste reminds a little bit old style - a bit sour and fruity. After reveals some smoke and lasts quite long. For a lager - quite different, but good.

Golden color, white head with good retention and nice lacework. Aroma is light malty with some smoky and grassy hints. Flavor is light bittery, notes of smoke and wood. Light bitterness in the final with mild body. Easy drinkable for a Schlenkerla

Bottle. Pours clear light golden color with small-medium head. Aroma is mixture of grass, honey, hay and grains. In flavor here are some grainy and grassy notes with background notes of smoked malts. Light-medium body. Bitter, just as it should be for helles. Overall: nice beer. True german. Very refreshing.

BOTTLE 50 CL. Clear golden, off-white head. Pale malts and white bread in the nose. The smoky notes are very faint, but the Schlenkerla is certainly there. The taste is very clean and smooth - bready malts, mealy, gentle malt sweetness and a light but characterful smoky note that blend into the grassy spicy bitter finish. Just what one would expect - an immaculate helles with a hint of smoky spiciness.
