“Schlenkerla Helles” is brewed with fine Bavarian aroma hops from the area around the city of Nürnberg. It’s lagered in century old caves underneath the historic Schlenkerla brewery and maltings. Schlenkerla Helles is boiled in the same copper kettles and bottom fermented by the same yeast as the historic Schlenkerla Smokebeer. Its subtle smokiness without using smoke malt makes “Helles Schlenkerla Lager” a unique representative of the classic lager beer style “Bavarian Helles”. Editor’s note: Since this is not intended as a smoked beer, and is not billed as such, it has been classed here as a Helles, despite some samples having residual smoke character.

Aroma: malty with very light hoppy notes. Taste: Dry with light malt sweetnes. Clean flavour: malts, some grassy hops, some white bread, and light but prominent smokiness. Very good and balanced.

BOTTLE 50 CL. Clear golden, off-white head. Pale malts and white bread in the nose. The smoky notes are very faint, but the Schlenkerla is certainly there. The taste is very clean and smooth - bready malts, mealy, gentle malt sweetness and a light but characterful smoky note that blend into the grassy spicy bitter finish. Just what one would expect - an immaculate helles with a hint of smoky spiciness.

Bottle. Clear yellow with a medium sized white head. Honey, heather, grain, hay and bread in the nose. Flavour follows with bread, mild meaty smoke, flowers, grain. Medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation, some sweetness, mild bitterness. Light and clean finish with mild smoke. Pleasant and refreshing.

Gode saker!

Bottle shared with JMD on board Fridtjofen 03.12.15. Clear golden. Persistent white head and lacing. Aroma and taste of grass, German hops, pilsner malt and a sublime touch of smoke and burnt print cards.

Bottle at Pivoteka Zagreb. Clear golden body, white head. Aroma... nice graininess, very, very light smoke, a bit simple but interesting nonetheless. Taste... a strong initial blast of bacon, ending abruptly, not as soft a mouthfeel as expected, and a bit too light. As the bacon goes away, the interest vanishes with it, but, in any case, it’s a nice light lager to try.

Mit dem Lager von Schlenkerla komm ich nicht zurecht. Zu viel Kohlensäure, der leichte Rauchgeschmack harmonisiert nicht mit dem schlanken Körper.

Crisp cereal, biscuit, sourdough bread, and floral, slightly herbal hops increasingly give way to honey and a hint of smokiness in the nose as you work your way down your glass. The mouthfeel is nimble, with moderate carbonation and a light but firm body. The taste is cerealy bitter, with a sudden, dry finish with the slightest peat. There isn’t much lingering bitterness, but in between sips the beautiful hop aromatics resurrect under the palate -- light ginger and floral flavors give the otherwise dry aftertaste a lot of color. Sweet Jesus, I loved it.
