4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 jerohen (1792) - Bussum, NETHERLANDS - NOV 11, 2004
UPDATED: APR 26, 2009 Clean golden coloured, thin lacing. Smells like a classic german pilsener, but then of course with the excellent smoked malts this brewery is famous for. Very smooth smoky flavour. Not as heavy as its brothers, but nicely balanced and very easy to drink.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 maeib (6618) - Wootton, Northampton, Northamptonshire, ENGLAND - JUN 13, 2004
UPDATED: FEB 25, 2011 Bottle at Evening Star Brighton. There was absolutely no signs of smokiness in either the aroma or taste of this beer (unfortunately). The smell was like a Marzen and the colour was virtually clear. The taste was however better being clean and dry. I like smoked beers a lot and struggle to see that this bottle did the brewery justification. Score 2.6 Subsequent rating scored 3.8. Average becomes 3.2

Clear yellow color, medium white head. Aroma of weak smoke, bacon, hops. Soft pilsener taste with some smoked notes. Bitter bacon aftertaste.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 MilkmanDan (1943) - Eagan, Minnesota, USA - MAR 6, 2004
Very smoky (duh). Really reminds me of barbeque, mesquite or something. Being that I generally associated these scents/flavors with barbequing stuff, this beer smells like meat to me. I'll add that I really, really like barbeque, though that's not particularly relevant. But what is relevant in the long run? I mean, on a cosmic scale, even the deepest concepts are . . . wait, I've wandered. Back to the review. Reminds me quite a bit of Rogue's Mexicali Ale, just missing the slight smoked chili aspect of that one. Has the same nice, creamy texture. Quite malty. Was really taken aback by the nose at first, but a surprisingly enjoyable brew.
3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Ernest (5181) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - FEB 9, 2004
UPDATED: DEC 26, 2008 Bottle. Head is initially average sized, frothy, white, mostly diminishing. Body is clear medium yellow. Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (toasted bread), lightly to moderately hoppy (flowers, herbs), with notes of smoke and honey. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. A simple beer, but very clean and succulent. Lovely aroma where malt, hops, and the smokiness all play equal roles.
2.1 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20 DanielBrown (2714) - Birmingham (via Leicester), West Midlands, ENGLAND - FEB 2, 2004
UPDATED: FEB 3, 2004 Bottle from the Swan and Rushes. Very disappointing stuff. Bland aroma: hammy lager, sweet and salty. This tastes like normal lager with a bit of ham. The flavour is not full and there is little development - in fact it's not at all complex. Some tingle on the tongue and a dry finish, but not too much out of the ordinary, only a little extra taste to a normal ' bad' lager. Disappointing from such a good brewer.

My bottle was called "Schlenkerla Helles Lager". Malty aroma. Long bitter finish. Not very smoked. Low carbonation.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Mads Langtved (2246) - Copenhagen K, DENMARK - AUG 29, 2003
Bottled Schlenkerla, Bamberg, Germany. 4.3 ABV. First I thought this beer was another, but apparently it's not. However I do not agree that this is a smoked beer, mine was'nt. That is why I think it is interesting to see a lager beer with no smoke taste from Schlenkerla. Rare and special.
