“Schlenkerla Helles” is brewed with fine Bavarian aroma hops from the area around the city of Nürnberg. It’s lagered in century old caves underneath the historic Schlenkerla brewery and maltings. Schlenkerla Helles is boiled in the same copper kettles and bottom fermented by the same yeast as the historic Schlenkerla Smokebeer. Its subtle smokiness without using smoke malt makes “Helles Schlenkerla Lager” a unique representative of the classic lager beer style “Bavarian Helles”. Editor’s note: Since this is not intended as a smoked beer, and is not billed as such, it has been classed here as a Helles, despite some samples having residual smoke character.

Bottled sample at Beers 2015. Carbonation is medium. Color is medium-light orange-brown. Aroma of caramel malt, very very slight smokiness, but it can be felt. Hops are very gentle. Just slightly sweet and very gently bitter. Strong malt flavors. A very nice amber lager, but nothing special.

Bottle. Clear straw golden with a stable white head. Aroma - malt, hay and light smoked bacon notes. Taste of sweetish malt, herbs, smoky, medium bitter finish, quite balanced and not very dry. Medium bodied, smooth and easy drinking, goes well with food. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

500ml brown bottle. Colour is yellow, clear. Small white head. Nose has light smoky notes. Taste has smoked malts and grass. Some lingering grassy bitterness and lingering smoke. Soft mouthfeel. Quite a nice lager, good bitterness and the smoke adds a nice dimension to the beer.

Unique approach. Juxtaposition of mild helles style with no malts but grainy, grassy notes and cereal backbone and campfire smoke. Smells like a campfire with liquid smoke. Heavy smoky notes with light malts, cereal notes a bit of grassy and floral notes. Lingering smoky notes and ashtray.
