“Schlenkerla Helles” is brewed with fine Bavarian aroma hops from the area around the city of Nürnberg. It’s lagered in century old caves underneath the historic Schlenkerla brewery and maltings. Schlenkerla Helles is boiled in the same copper kettles and bottom fermented by the same yeast as the historic Schlenkerla Smokebeer. Its subtle smokiness without using smoke malt makes “Helles Schlenkerla Lager” a unique representative of the classic lager beer style “Bavarian Helles”. Editor’s note: Since this is not intended as a smoked beer, and is not billed as such, it has been classed here as a Helles, despite some samples having residual smoke character.

Light aroma with a cloudy straw appearance. Understated taste and a little bite in the mouth. Decent but not my favorite.

Pours a medium yellow with a full white head that lingers and leaves much lacing. Nose is faint malt. Body is medium. Tate is sligh smoke, dry with lingering slight bitterness. Half liter bottle

Clear, golden, bubbly white head. Aroma has a distinct smoky characteristic. Taste is malt forward, some bread notes. Finishes long, lingering and smoky, with an almost sausage-like undertone. Very light body, soft carbonation. An unusual combination of flavours, but they seem to work reasonably well together.

500 ml bottle from Beervana, labeled Helles Schlenkerla Lagerbier. Thank you, Naty, my love. Pours a clear golden color with a medium white head that diminishes slowly and laces well. Soft malty and grainy aromas with fine noble hops. Notes of cereal, dough, biscuit, grassy hops, white bread and soft wood. Only with some warming I get a soft hint of smoke. It finely compliments the aroma of a refined Helles. Taste is pretty full for the style. The very soft and elegant herbal bitterness balanced out by a neutral semi-sweet dough taste. Malt dominated but hops neither absent nor timid at all. Somewhat bitter finish and aftertaste. Light to medium body, refreshing, lively carbonated. Incredibly Moreish! This one is a very elegant, refined, top of the line Helles. Maybe not "exciting" but it’s as good as the style can get. I never thought I would rate so high a beer of a style I usually considered "boring".

Bought a 500 ml bottle at Total Wine for $5.49. The beer has a pleasing golden color with a minimal head of white foam. I was not able to detect the subtle smokiness that the brewery claims is present. However, I found the overall sweetness and light body very pleasant and refreshing. The only thing deterring me from drinking this regularly is the price.

0,5 bottle purchased at Johnny Off L. in Rome-Italy, consumed in Serbia. BB11/2015, I think it is a fresh batch. Pours a clea golden color, very clean with a solid tick white cap. Nose: a crash of malts along with a predominant hops aroma, a bit grassy but also kind of zesty. Clean nose, quite fresh. Tons of bread crust. Mouth: surprisingly clean although in a bottle, knowing Franconia beers do not bottle that good. Perfect carbonation going on the soft side, crispy body, clean and drinkable. A frizzy aftertaste, a bit peppery on the bitter side. Malts all around. Next time if fresh I will try to buy more bottles.

Bottle 0.5l. Clear light golden-yellow with small white head. The aroma has notes of sausage, earthy with some graininess. Bitterish flavor, a bit smoked, earthy with notes of sausage, some graininess and grassy hops, dry, lingering grassy bitterness. Lively carbonation, light to medium-bodied. Nice.
