“Schlenkerla Helles” is brewed with fine Bavarian aroma hops from the area around the city of Nürnberg. It’s lagered in century old caves underneath the historic Schlenkerla brewery and maltings. Schlenkerla Helles is boiled in the same copper kettles and bottom fermented by the same yeast as the historic Schlenkerla Smokebeer. Its subtle smokiness without using smoke malt makes “Helles Schlenkerla Lager” a unique representative of the classic lager beer style “Bavarian Helles”. Editor’s note: Since this is not intended as a smoked beer, and is not billed as such, it has been classed here as a Helles, despite some samples having residual smoke character.

500ml bottle. An above average Helles lager on account of the subtle smoky bacon flavours that leave a mark on your palate at the finish. Sweet buttery grainy malts dominate the front end. Little hop bitterness. Medium-light body with clean mouthfeel. Clear bright golden pour with small white head.

Tres bonne lager. Avec un arome et un gout legerment fumé, amčre et malté. Bonne pétillance. Du niveau de la brasserie Schlenkerla

On tap at the Euston Tap. Deep amber gold in colour, nice thin foam of head. The slightest hint of smoke on the nose. This was superbly drinkable, the top end of German soft drinking malty lagers, biscuits and cookies, crisp, refreshing, and with the addition of a hint of smoke. More like malt that has seen a hint of smokiness in there, not the brutal barbeque of the officially smoked Schlenkerla stuff. Really quite pleasant.

The smokiness of this beer is the most prominent while drinking it. It pours with a golden color with no head at all. It has a really good taste to it though and I would drink it again. Overall it has a nice taste and you can really taste the smokiness in the beer.

Bottle from supermarket. Golden color, white head. Bitter taste with citrus, smoke, grain, hops, grass and salted crackers. Bitter finish with hops, grain and a bit of smoke. Excellent helles.

August 2010. From bottle. Golden color with a white head. Aromas of malt, yeast, grain, light fruit and just a hint of smoke. Good balance and hoppy finish.

Head gone disappointingly quickly. I didn’t detect a lot of smoke here, mainly it was biscuity malt with quite a sweet finish - some cookie dough and angel cake with a streak of citrus in the finish. Pleasant and interesting lager.

Goldenrod colored body, medium to large white head, spotty lacing. Lightly smokey-earth lager yeast, grass, biscuit, and some sharper grains. Medium to light bodied with lively carbonation and a crisp refreshing finish.
