COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
“Schlenkerla Helles” is brewed with fine Bavarian aroma hops from the area around the city of Nürnberg. It’s lagered in century old caves underneath the historic Schlenkerla brewery and maltings. Schlenkerla Helles is boiled in the same copper kettles and bottom fermented by the same yeast as the historic Schlenkerla Smokebeer. Its subtle smokiness without using smoke malt makes “Helles Schlenkerla Lager” a unique representative of the classic lager beer style “Bavarian Helles”. Editor’s note: Since this is not intended as a smoked beer, and is not billed as such, it has been classed here as a Helles, despite some samples having residual smoke character.

Bottle. Clear yellow colour. Plasticy, thready head. The aroma has a little ashtray. The flavour is quite malty with a bit of smoke, more than a hint. Pleasant, medium bitterness. And pleasant mild to medium carbonation.

Pours slightly cloudy golden straw color with dense white head. Aromas herbal spiciness, floral, and a light metallic off note. Taste of pear, pepper, apricot, apple, cracker, toasted grain, and herbal spiciness with smoky sensation througohut. Fairly dry on the finish. Very nice and well balanced flavors. Medium carbonation and light-medium bodied; with a slightly creamy and very smooth mouthfeel.

500 ml bottle into pilsener glass, no bottle dating. Pours slightly cloudy golden straw color with a nice 2 finger dense white head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a thick cap that lingers. Some nice lacing on the glass, with plenty of carbonation streaming up retaining a dense head. Aromas of big pepper, bread, light smoke, apple, pear, herbal spiciness, floral, and a light metallic off note. Some pretty nice and balanced aromas with decent strength. Taste of pear, pepper, apricot, apple, grass, biscuit, floral, cracker, toasted grain, and herbal spiciness. Fairly dry on the finish; with some lingering notes of pear, apricot, grass, toasted grain, earth, and herbal spiciness on the finish for a short bit. Very nice and well balanced flavors. Medium carbonation and light-medium bodied; with a slightly creamy and very smooth mouthfeel. Alcohol presence is essentially non existent as expected of 4.3%. Overall this is a really nice, smooth, and balanced Munich Helles lager. It probably wasn’t very fresh, but it was still very enjoyable.

Bottle. Nose is malty, straw and hay, with a minor smoke background note. Cloudy yellow, light head. Very balanced with sweet malt notes up front and smoke in the finish, lingering. Beautiful rauch, very subdued compared to other Schlenkerla offerings. The lighter smokiness really lets the rest of a well-brewed beer shine.

Bottle (not sure why I haven’t rated this before). Pours with a crystal clear golden hued body with a medium sized white head that lasts and leaves some pretty respectable lace. Aromas are bready, lightly toasty, malty, grassy, medium malty sweetness. Faintest hint of DMS. Light and refined smoke (like a shirt the day after BBQing-using a smoker not a grill). Very light noble/herbal hop character. This is a smoke character in a beer that I appreciate. Clean yeast wise. Flavors are lightly bacony, refined smoked meat aroma. Some bready malt character. Perhaps a touch thin/watery. Nice malt presence, bready, biscuity, pils. Very low hop character. Clean yeast, pretty crisp. A very easy to drink smoked beer, which is often not the case. Lively bubbles, medium thin. Quite a nice beer without being too smokey; quite enjoyable. Always worth buying again.

Aroma of starchy malts and a very distinct smoke background. Persistent two finger head and explosive carbonation. This is listed as the best German helles on RB, but I really feel this is a smoked lager, light as it may be. The smoke may be an addition as opposed to the smoked malts used in the brewer’s other beers, but it remains the dominant element. It’s is heavy on the palate and somewhat drying. Trying out the shallow end of Heller’s pool, and looking forward to going out deeper.

Interesting combo of noble hop and a slight sulfury smokiness on the aroma. Truly bright yello beer with a very slightly greenish hue. Tall foamy white head. Flavor is very clean biscuit with the sulfur/smoky note repeated. Dry finish.

Bottle picked up at Beertopia Omaha, opened in Exira, Iowa. Pours a clear, golden appearance with a bubbly white head. Sweet grainy, husky, pale malty, rich straw aroma. Crisp, light pale malty, straw, hay flavor with a bit of woody smokiness in the background. Refreshing and easy drinking. Fuck, I could drink five maß of this and not even realize it. Excellent brew.
