COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
“Schlenkerla Helles” is brewed with fine Bavarian aroma hops from the area around the city of Nürnberg. It’s lagered in century old caves underneath the historic Schlenkerla brewery and maltings. Schlenkerla Helles is boiled in the same copper kettles and bottom fermented by the same yeast as the historic Schlenkerla Smokebeer. Its subtle smokiness without using smoke malt makes “Helles Schlenkerla Lager” a unique representative of the classic lager beer style “Bavarian Helles”. Editor’s note: Since this is not intended as a smoked beer, and is not billed as such, it has been classed here as a Helles, despite some samples having residual smoke character.

Growler from Last Drop.

Gold pour, lovely light smoke aroma with some grain. Easy drinking helles augmented by this beautiful understated smoke is absolutely delicious. Nothing like the overpowering Aecht Rauchbiers, just enough smoke to keep it interesting. Dry close. Super-nice summer beer.

Bottle shared at Richard’s place. Clear golden, white head. Smoked malts, chalk, sausage, beans. Light sweet, moderate bitter. Medium body, low carbonation, gritty feel, ashy, likeable brew.

Bottle shared thanks to sjogro. Clear bright golden with nice white head. Light smoke, almonds, sweet grains, light sweet white beans, soft grass, very light herbs. Light sweet and bitter. Almost medium bodied with soft feel. Too smoked for me even though it’s not even supposed to be a smoked beer. Great mouthfeel though.

Pours a clear straw yellow with a thin white ring. Light smoke aroma. Not much smoke flavor, very light. Not as enjoyable as the other styles from this brand but still OK.

Bottle. Nose is sweet, lightly smoke, herbal hop notes,, hints of cheese and meats. Taste is soft cereal, bread, grass, pine, herbal hops leading to a gentle, but building soft savoury smoke, cheese and meats taste; lots of umami. The smoke adds depth and charterer to a fairly bland style of beer, I really enjoyed it. See Germany, it’s good to experiment in brewing....

25 This pours a clear gold with over a finger of foam. Smells like a hoppy Lager with a touch of smoke. Malty and lightly smoked taste up front with a bit of hop bitterness for balance. Medium body, light carbonation. The smoke intensifies as the session goes on but never reaches over done. A real joy to drink.

Bottle at Beerville, Belgrade. Soapy head on bright clear gold. Light rich smoke, pale clean aroma malts. Smoke is clean, heavy and clear. Distinct. Smoky pork smokehouse fresh. Body is clean malty helles lager. Tons of precise, intriguing smoke. Lovely beer!

4.3%ABV. Smoke Lager Tapped out pale gold. 4ºSRM. Nose has thin sweet and a flowery dimension that connects in my mid-brain immediately as chrysanthemum tea. There is also straw, like the aroma of a Japanese room with tatami. There is also a woody dimension to the nose that is like wet, fresh cut pine, or wet driftwood, especially when you drag it onto a beach bonfire. There is steam and smoke as well. Mouthfeel is watery and reinforces the impression of chrysanthemum tea. Palate is thin and sweet and pale malt all the way with water biscuit, wheat dough and pale honey. There is a hint of smoke in mid palate and not unpleasant. Hops are lightly bitter and well-balanced. Finish is almost floral. Despite myself, I’m going to put this on the favorites list for being a very sweet, immensely approachable and aromatically quite interesting beer.
