COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
“Schlenkerla Helles” is brewed with fine Bavarian aroma hops from the area around the city of Nürnberg. It’s lagered in century old caves underneath the historic Schlenkerla brewery and maltings. Schlenkerla Helles is boiled in the same copper kettles and bottom fermented by the same yeast as the historic Schlenkerla Smokebeer. Its subtle smokiness without using smoke malt makes “Helles Schlenkerla Lager” a unique representative of the classic lager beer style “Bavarian Helles”. Editor’s note: Since this is not intended as a smoked beer, and is not billed as such, it has been classed here as a Helles, despite some samples having residual smoke character.

500 ml bottle from BG Birra, served in a goblet glass. Beautiful rich gold, perfectly clear, with a creamy, persistent bright white head. Looks gorgeous. On the nose bready malts, light yeast, mild herbal hoppyness, a hint of wet cardboard in the far background. So smooth and clean in the mouth, much more bitter than expected upfront, but then an almost light sugary sweetness follows. Solid malty base, pleasent herbal hoppy punch, and just a tiny smokey/ashy sensation in the aftertaste, mainly coating the lips. Ridicously drinkable. Average to lively carbonation, medum body, slightly creamy texture. Stunning.

0,5L bottle from Hopfen and malz, Berlin! Pours a nice and clear color with a nice head. Aroma is grassy, bread-like and pleasant with a hint of smoke to it. Flavor is quite interesting and bready, with flavors of light malts, corn and spicy herbs. Has a slight smoky finish to it that makes this beer stand out. Really delicious!

Bottle. Mostly clear golden pour, with a white head. Grain, corn, mild smoke, some sweetness, and grass. Ok, but I’m not liking it too much.

500ml bottle, BB Dec 2015, 4.3%. Pale orange, sparkling, clear, small foamy white head with no retention. Aroma is metallic, cardboard, lager malts. Body is medium, tingly carbonation, pretty smooth. Taste is lager, toffee, soft smoke, salty, some metallics, enduring musty bitterness. The smokey saltiness brings this up over most lagers for me. Drinkable, tasty stuff.

UPDATED: APR 6, 2015 Bottle. Pours crystal clear yellow with white head. Aroma is really german pils at first. Light corn, slight metallic, earthy hops. Sweet malts and just crisp. Some really subtle smoky notes in there as well. Taste is really light, fresh and crisp! Then finish is quite dry, rather bitter, earthy and spicy hops. And then smoked bacon! My new favourite lager!

Bottle. Sweet on the nose, like classic German pils. Jawohl! Light scent of smoke in it, but really subtle. So nice and easily drinkable.. Quite a bit of smoke, but so smooth! Gets smokier as it heats up.. Aw yisss!

Fresh malty, slightly roasty with nice smokey undertone. Fresh malty and dry body. Nice and intense. Full round and malty-intense with a decent smoke. Great intense with a malty-dry and nice smoked aftertaste.

Bottle. Yellow golden color, big white head. Aroma of cream, grain and malt. Taste of grain, creamy malt and subtle smoke. Subtle, elegant and quite taste for a lager.

Una lager con un pizzico di affumicato. Una birra pulita, piacevole, beverina. Nulla di complesso o rivoluzionario ma una birra interessante per ucciddere la sete e la monotonia.

UPDATED: MAR 22, 2015 16.9 oz bottle, shared with friend, poured into tulip glass

Aroma: smoke, some noble/spicy hops

Appearance: golden, white head

Taste: sweet with light bitterness

Palate: light body, lingering smoky finish

Overall: A very nice smoked helles. The smokiness is great and not overpowering. You can still taste the Helles and the smoke compliments the style. Well balanced for smoked beer. Very drinkable.

Pours murky yellow with a foamy cap that offers little in the way of lacing. First sip comes off an naive as I was unaware that it had smoked essence to it. A tad thin, with some interesting leafy hop notes & a mineral touch. Drill deeper into the bottle & realize its a unique take on the style with a lot of character. I don’t love it, but I’m glad I’ve had it.
