COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
“Schlenkerla Helles” is brewed with fine Bavarian aroma hops from the area around the city of Nürnberg. It’s lagered in century old caves underneath the historic Schlenkerla brewery and maltings. Schlenkerla Helles is boiled in the same copper kettles and bottom fermented by the same yeast as the historic Schlenkerla Smokebeer. Its subtle smokiness without using smoke malt makes “Helles Schlenkerla Lager” a unique representative of the classic lager beer style “Bavarian Helles”. Editor’s note: Since this is not intended as a smoked beer, and is not billed as such, it has been classed here as a Helles, despite some samples having residual smoke character.

Strong peppery spicy little bit of skunky aroma. Smoky flavors finish and linger in the aftertaste. Very interesting. Don’t dislike at all but then again could only drink so much. Makes you want to eat food.

UPDATED: MAR 22, 2015 16.9 oz bottle, shared with friend, poured into tulip glass

Aroma: smoke, some noble/spicy hops

Appearance: golden, white head

Taste: sweet with light bitterness

Palate: light body, lingering smoky finish

Overall: A very nice smoked helles. The smokiness is great and not overpowering. You can still taste the Helles and the smoke compliments the style. Well balanced for smoked beer. Very drinkable.

Pours murky yellow with a foamy cap that offers little in the way of lacing. First sip comes off an naive as I was unaware that it had smoked essence to it. A tad thin, with some interesting leafy hop notes & a mineral touch. Drill deeper into the bottle & realize its a unique take on the style with a lot of character. I don’t love it, but I’m glad I’ve had it.

Pours a clear amber, slightly darker than golden. Normal head volume, lacing and retention. Light nose that is slightly sweet biscuit. Underneath is a subtle smokiness that is more campfire like in nature rather than bacon. Light medium bodied, barely, with a texture that approaches smooth. Above normal carbonation with a bit of effervescence in the middle and a nice prickly burst in the finish. The outstanding flavor profile is intense, a bit complex and very well balanced. It begins with a mixture of flavors that slowly separate into a mild oak like smokiness over a subtle sweet biscuit. In the middle, it becomes rather crisp and becomes dryer towards the finish. A slightly bitter smokiness lingers.

Aroma: light smokey, grain and bread malts, light caramel. Appearance: clear gold, massive, frothy, white head. Taste: light bitter. Palate: intense grain malts again, caramel, slightly dry finish. Overall: quite a nice Helles with the benefit of some smoked flavours. Bottle from Utobeer, London Bridge.

bottle, 05lt. Found at Valentin - Curious Biekneipe, Volos. The aroma is classic malty Lager, with a small hint of smoky. The same goes for the looks, deep golden with white foam. The taste ist just great, you got a classic Helles Lager with the smoky feeling existing but just adding taste without to get the main star. A good carbonation and medium body, maybe a bit oily, with a overall very nice taste that explode the "simple" blond Lager into extraordinary.

500ml bottle. Clear, brass-golden colour with average, thick, frothy to creamy, half-way lasting, moderately lacing, white head. Grassy, woody, minimally smoky aroma, hints of peppercress, green pepper and dietary salami. Taste is dry, husky, minimally grainy, smoky leavings, grassy hoppy overtones, a mineral touch, very subtle pale malt sweetness; a greasy ’Salame Milano’ layer remains on the lips. Even Schlenkerla’s "dishwater" is better than almost any other Helles.

500ml bottle from beermerchants.com. Pours a helles gold with medium white head. Taste has a light smokiness behind a decent helles character, just enough in fact without being dominating. A pleasant smoky lager.

0,5 l bottle from Schlenkerla webshop, best before end 6/2015. Clear, pale golden yellow with a medium large, fluffy, slowly collapsing, white head. Subtle smokey aroma of smoked ham and campfire with lager-like notes of grass, sweetish malts and butter. Sweetish taste of smoked ham, cereals and butter with a short, slightly bitter and grassy finish. Thin body, fresh mouthfeel, average carbonation. Very tasty and sessionable helles with a gentle smokey note that therefore stands out in this style. Good!

Clear golden with a medium sized creamy white head. Crispy aroma of noble hops and clean malty/grainy notes with faint smokey notes. Taste is light to medium sweet with floral, grassy and herbal bitterness. Very smooth and easy drinkable, soft carbonation.
