COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
“Schlenkerla Helles” is brewed with fine Bavarian aroma hops from the area around the city of Nürnberg. It’s lagered in century old caves underneath the historic Schlenkerla brewery and maltings. Schlenkerla Helles is boiled in the same copper kettles and bottom fermented by the same yeast as the historic Schlenkerla Smokebeer. Its subtle smokiness without using smoke malt makes “Helles Schlenkerla Lager” a unique representative of the classic lager beer style “Bavarian Helles”. Editor’s note: Since this is not intended as a smoked beer, and is not billed as such, it has been classed here as a Helles, despite some samples having residual smoke character.

One I missed last time I was in Bamberg. Happy to see it here in Oz, a perfect choice on a hot Summer’s day.
Lively pour, quite effervescent. Sparkling medium gold with a fine bead that raises a satiny pillow of white. The head’s well retained, adds to the mouthfeel and leaves a lovely web of lace. Bad boy, bold, gritty and very raw aroma of toasted malts on the nose with a low hint of smoked meats and earthy noble hops. There is also a low vinous quality to it that comes out after a few harder sniffs. Soft, creamy mouthfeel, frothy and full. A raspy, sharp and herbal hop note dominates some ample toasted grains and barnyard notes. Very clean, very crisp, the finish has just a touch of the smoked character of its bigger brothers mixed with bright hops and supple citric notes. Shows nice balance, the flavour builds as it warms and it just gets better and better, a touch of peat emerges late. I could slam this back in bulk and still be savouring each ensuing sip. A delicious Helles. (50cL, BBE 10/12, Mane Liquor, Belmont)

Bottle picked up at Beertopia Omaha, opened in Exira, Iowa. Pours a clear, golden appearance with a bubbly white head. Sweet grainy, husky, pale malty, rich straw aroma. Crisp, light pale malty, straw, hay flavor with a bit of woody smokiness in the background. Refreshing and easy drinking. Fuck, I could drink five maß of this and not even realize it. Excellent brew.

UPDATED: FEB 18, 2014 Bottle: yellow & straw color with a thick chill haze, topped off by a puffy & cloud-like white head that has excellent retention and leaves plenty of chunky lace behind. Aroma is humongous bread, grain, barley, thick yeast, mildly musky hops, and an uplifting dose of sweet, subtle smokiness. Fresh, crisp, clean, unique. Taste follows right along. Bready malts, toasted grains, & sweet smoke, almost like the liquid smoke that you use to barbecue with, though not as "peaty". Subtle, yet integral to the excellence. Finishing citrus zest, grains, & light smoke. One of the most drinkable beers I’ve had, and my personal favorite helles lager. A simple, yet great beer.

Excellent, brilliant stuff, a light smokiness pervades the beer and lingers legitimately for hours despite never being overwhelming, with a more traditional crispy light sweet helles malt body making up the majority of the flavor. Great beer.

UPDATED: APR 26, 2009 Clean golden coloured, thin lacing. Smells like a classic german pilsener, but then of course with the excellent smoked malts this brewery is famous for. Very smooth smoky flavour. Not as heavy as its brothers, but nicely balanced and very easy to drink.

I am a fan of rauchbiers, so was unsure how this lighter version would stand up to the high quality I expect from Schlenkerla. Poured golden, from the glass it appeared as a typical pilsener, but when the aromas hit, I knew it was what I expected. Subtle hints of smoked malt in the nose carried into the modestly malty sweet palate. Shared with friends, this one garnered high praise from all. Unfortunate I havent seen this in the US, thanks to my Brother for bringing this back with him!

Draught @ Reading Beer Festival 2006. Pale gold and voluminous head. Slight smoke, grassy hops. Despite smoke and very clean and refreshing lager with a firm but delicate body. Resurgence of smokiness in the finish. Excellent.

God I love smoked beers. This one pours a pretty standard golden lager color with a thick and fluffy white head. Aroma of crisp apple with a significant dose of charred wood. What we have is a skillfully crafted Helles featuring a crisp hoppy flavor and a strong malt presence. What really sets this apart is the underlying smoky flavor that adds complexity to this outstanding brew without dominating everything with smoked meat flavors. A smoked session beer if there ever was one.

Tryed this beer at Max’s, it is absolutly wonderful. very clean taste, the first sip really tasted smokey but that soon went away to reviel the flavor of hops and malt. The beer overall is well ballenced, no one flavor hits you too strong.

Rated to style and expectations, which were low as I had no idea this is smoked also until I poured it. No, this is no bland typical lager. IT’s basically a lighter smoked but in the same vien as their other rauchbiers. It’s got a nice leathery beefy aroma. Clear helles straw gold beer with snowy head. Has a healthy touch of that meaty smokiness on the tongue, a pleasant surprise. good malt-pure beer with modest bitter hops, a top compared to general lagers, and given its low alcohol, that is an appropriate comparison. It tastes more like a normal lager as you drink it. This is a beer to session when you want to have one fine-ass session.
