COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
“Schlenkerla Helles” is brewed with fine Bavarian aroma hops from the area around the city of Nürnberg. It’s lagered in century old caves underneath the historic Schlenkerla brewery and maltings. Schlenkerla Helles is boiled in the same copper kettles and bottom fermented by the same yeast as the historic Schlenkerla Smokebeer. Its subtle smokiness without using smoke malt makes “Helles Schlenkerla Lager” a unique representative of the classic lager beer style “Bavarian Helles”. Editor’s note: Since this is not intended as a smoked beer, and is not billed as such, it has been classed here as a Helles, despite some samples having residual smoke character.

This one I really liked. Having tried the other offerings by Heller I was bracing for "charcoal in a glass". While the smoke was certainly present, it was a contributor rather than the monotone flavor. There was room for malt and hops too, and this beer could stand on its own, without needing to pair it with food.

Review from notes at Peg’s Cantina on 9/10/11. Poured from a 16.9 oz. bottle into a pint glass. Appearance: Poured clear light gold with a 2 finger snow white head. Nice lacing. Smell: Lager yeast and malt with a nice smoky background. Taste: Typical German lager with a nice portion of smokiness. The smoke has a bacon-like quality to it. There is a touch of herbal hops at the finish. Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied with a nice amount of carbonation. Drinkability: Good drinkability. This would be perfect on a cool autumn day. You could drink several without any trouble. Overall: Very good beer overall. The smoke enhances the flavor instead of dominating it. I would definitely recommend this one.

One I missed last time I was in Bamberg. Happy to see it here in Oz, a perfect choice on a hot Summer’s day.
Lively pour, quite effervescent. Sparkling medium gold with a fine bead that raises a satiny pillow of white. The head’s well retained, adds to the mouthfeel and leaves a lovely web of lace. Bad boy, bold, gritty and very raw aroma of toasted malts on the nose with a low hint of smoked meats and earthy noble hops. There is also a low vinous quality to it that comes out after a few harder sniffs. Soft, creamy mouthfeel, frothy and full. A raspy, sharp and herbal hop note dominates some ample toasted grains and barnyard notes. Very clean, very crisp, the finish has just a touch of the smoked character of its bigger brothers mixed with bright hops and supple citric notes. Shows nice balance, the flavour builds as it warms and it just gets better and better, a touch of peat emerges late. I could slam this back in bulk and still be savouring each ensuing sip. A delicious Helles. (50cL, BBE 10/12, Mane Liquor, Belmont)

Bottle picked up at Beertopia Omaha, opened in Exira, Iowa. Pours a clear, golden appearance with a bubbly white head. Sweet grainy, husky, pale malty, rich straw aroma. Crisp, light pale malty, straw, hay flavor with a bit of woody smokiness in the background. Refreshing and easy drinking. Fuck, I could drink five maß of this and not even realize it. Excellent brew.

UPDATED: FEB 18, 2014 Bottle: yellow & straw color with a thick chill haze, topped off by a puffy & cloud-like white head that has excellent retention and leaves plenty of chunky lace behind. Aroma is humongous bread, grain, barley, thick yeast, mildly musky hops, and an uplifting dose of sweet, subtle smokiness. Fresh, crisp, clean, unique. Taste follows right along. Bready malts, toasted grains, & sweet smoke, almost like the liquid smoke that you use to barbecue with, though not as "peaty". Subtle, yet integral to the excellence. Finishing citrus zest, grains, & light smoke. One of the most drinkable beers I’ve had, and my personal favorite helles lager. A simple, yet great beer.

Excellent, brilliant stuff, a light smokiness pervades the beer and lingers legitimately for hours despite never being overwhelming, with a more traditional crispy light sweet helles malt body making up the majority of the flavor. Great beer.

Aecht Schlenkerla Helles Lagerbier has a thick, crackly, white head, a hazy, golden appearance, bubble streams, rather heavy lacing, and noticeable tan specks suspended throughout. The aroma is of very sweet, biscuit barley malt, bread crust, and smoke, which dies away over a bit of time. Taste is of those elements, riding alongside some pretty significant smoke presence. Yes, you do picked up the smoked pork with this one. Mouthfeel is medium, and Aecht Schlenkerla Helles Lagerbier finishes crisp, refreshing, and smoky. RJT

bottle, 05lt. Found at Valentin - Curious Biekneipe, Volos. The aroma is classic malty Lager, with a small hint of smoky. The same goes for the looks, deep golden with white foam. The taste ist just great, you got a classic Helles Lager with the smoky feeling existing but just adding taste without to get the main star. A good carbonation and medium body, maybe a bit oily, with a overall very nice taste that explode the "simple" blond Lager into extraordinary.

Pours light gold with a thick white head. Aroma of smoke, biscuit, and malt. Taste follows, great smoke presence but not over the top. I absolutely love this beer.

Crisp and refreshing like a good lager but with a healthy dose of smoke. Bit of smokey bacon on the nose and trip that no smoked malts were used to brew this. One of the best from the brewery. Not as fierce as the others yet the dangerously drinkable.
