“Schlenkerla Helles” is brewed with fine Bavarian aroma hops from the area around the city of Nürnberg. It’s lagered in century old caves underneath the historic Schlenkerla brewery and maltings. Schlenkerla Helles is boiled in the same copper kettles and bottom fermented by the same yeast as the historic Schlenkerla Smokebeer. Its subtle smokiness without using smoke malt makes “Helles Schlenkerla Lager” a unique representative of the classic lager beer style “Bavarian Helles”. Editor’s note: Since this is not intended as a smoked beer, and is not billed as such, it has been classed here as a Helles, despite some samples having residual smoke character.

There is a bit of smoke in the aroma which is the same in the flavor, very interesting for such a pale beer.

Golden, perfectly clear, very small head. Aroma: malt, butter, smoke, bit of hops. Light body, medium sweetness, medium bitterness. Quite a lot of smoke notes in flavour, clean malty profile, hoppy finish.

Draft at Brauhaus Schmitz. Clear gold pour with an abundance of white foam. Clean, solid, gentle smoky flavor from top to bottom. Modest blonde caramel malts underneath. Works quite well. Not overpowering.

Great presence, looks super nice in the glass. In aroma - clear, smoky notes typical for the brewery. Pleasant one, but not so intense as I would expect. Taste has a lot of malty notes, but just after them there is pleasant smoky notes. Still - not that intense, but well balanced, well put all together. It’s not as amazing as other Schlenkerla’s beers, but still good one. It’s more classical approach to the style, with polite smokiness.

Flaska från SB. Blekorange/gul med vitt skum. Doft och smak av pilsnermalt, lite brödiga toner, blöt kartong och honung med fina, subtila röktoner. En klassisk oktoberöl med en släng av rök.

Bottle into mug. Medium-pale yellow, fine white retained head.Grain noise, hint of smoke. Light grain taste (heavier than wheat, not quite corn), with light smoke in the mid palate, and finishing with just a bit of hops that clears out the pallet. I like the smoke in this one -- it doesn’t overwhelm and the hops balance it out nicely.

Bottle at Blackfriars. Pours clear golden with a large white head which largely remains and laces the glass on descent. Aroma is straw, hay and a modicum of smokiness. Taste is butter, straw, caramel sweet and a nice compliment of smoke. Buttery mouthfeel.
