“Schlenkerla Helles” is brewed with fine Bavarian aroma hops from the area around the city of Nürnberg. It’s lagered in century old caves underneath the historic Schlenkerla brewery and maltings. Schlenkerla Helles is boiled in the same copper kettles and bottom fermented by the same yeast as the historic Schlenkerla Smokebeer. Its subtle smokiness without using smoke malt makes “Helles Schlenkerla Lager” a unique representative of the classic lager beer style “Bavarian Helles”. Editor’s note: Since this is not intended as a smoked beer, and is not billed as such, it has been classed here as a Helles, despite some samples having residual smoke character.

Bottle. Golden color, frothy white head. Hints of butter and lemon in the aroma. Clean, well-balanced flavor with a wisp of smoke and a fairly dry finish. Medium body, medium carbonation. Very nice and would be quite sessionable as well.

Color palido muy claro con espuma blanca de buena formacion y persistente. Aroma levaduras, algo de ahumado y notas ligeras de malta, en boca igual que en aroma.

500ml bottle. Clear pale golden color with white head. Aroma is malty grainy, grassy, light hoppy, smoked notes. Sweet and bitter taste. Light thin to oily body with soft to average carbonation.

Pours a clear yellow color with a medium sized white head. The aroma is unfortunate somewhat skunked, lightly roasted barley, and some breadiness. The taste is smokey but very faint compared to their smoke beers. There is some hop bitterness but faint.

Im Glas wie ein typisches Pils, in der Nase leichtes Raucharoma. Im Trunk malzig mit sanfter, dezenter Rauchnote. Kurz danach bitter-herb. Sehr schöne Komplexität.

500ml bottle pours a hazy golden color with a finger of white head that settles to leave some spotty lacing on the glass. Aroma is smoky with some grains and grass. Taste is a grassy hop bitterness with a grainy malt sweetness finishing with some smoky sensations on the palate. Light bodied with decent carbonation. Overall, a quality lager beer with some added smokiness that adds a little character to a basic lager.

0,5L bottle from Hopfen and malz, Berlin! Pours a nice and clear color with a nice head. Aroma is grassy, bread-like and pleasant with a hint of smoke to it. Flavor is quite interesting and bready, with flavors of light malts, corn and spicy herbs. Has a slight smoky finish to it that makes this beer stand out. Really delicious!

Bottle. Mostly clear golden pour, with a white head. Grain, corn, mild smoke, some sweetness, and grass. Ok, but I’m not liking it too much.

500ml bottle, BB Dec 2015, 4.3%. Pale orange, sparkling, clear, small foamy white head with no retention. Aroma is metallic, cardboard, lager malts. Body is medium, tingly carbonation, pretty smooth. Taste is lager, toffee, soft smoke, salty, some metallics, enduring musty bitterness. The smokey saltiness brings this up over most lagers for me. Drinkable, tasty stuff.

UPDATED: APR 6, 2015 Bottle. Pours crystal clear yellow with white head. Aroma is really german pils at first. Light corn, slight metallic, earthy hops. Sweet malts and just crisp. Some really subtle smoky notes in there as well. Taste is really light, fresh and crisp! Then finish is quite dry, rather bitter, earthy and spicy hops. And then smoked bacon! My new favourite lager!
