COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
“Schlenkerla Helles” is brewed with fine Bavarian aroma hops from the area around the city of Nürnberg. It’s lagered in century old caves underneath the historic Schlenkerla brewery and maltings. Schlenkerla Helles is boiled in the same copper kettles and bottom fermented by the same yeast as the historic Schlenkerla Smokebeer. Its subtle smokiness without using smoke malt makes “Helles Schlenkerla Lager” a unique representative of the classic lager beer style “Bavarian Helles”. Editor’s note: Since this is not intended as a smoked beer, and is not billed as such, it has been classed here as a Helles, despite some samples having residual smoke character.

A bottle from One Pint in Helsinki. I was surprised they had this, because I haven’t seen this beer even in Bavaria! The smoked notes mentioned in the label were not detectable in the aroma nor taste. All in all, Schlenkerla Helles a fairly pleasant normal Helles.

Slightly darker than golden, clear. Head is quite dense and persistent, nice lacing. In the aroma: light/gentle smokiness (ashes, speck) throughout, a refreshing herbal/grassy feel and a hint of fruitiness. Maybe not super vivid but sure very fine. In the taste: bready malt foundation, quite fragrant. Refreshing grassy notes. Subtle fruity hints of apple and maybe lemon, slight hint of bitterness and floral hops in the finish. All in all a classic, fine helles. Among this, a subtle/gentle smokiness (ashes) that is very well integrated but never overpowering. Body is light, carbonation is soft but as mentioned the beer is still quite fragrant. Overall it’s a super easy drinker but it’s still full of subtle nuances. Fine, that’s the better way to describe this

I’m not a huge fan of smoked beer, but this one does not contain smoked malt, picking up a light smoky flavor from the Schlenkerla vats. That makes for a pretty interesting and tasty helles lager. Aroma of grass, smoke and hops. Big bottle poured into a 22oz nonic, clear lager beer coloring. It is true that the light smokiness obscures the normal characteristic flavors of a German lager, but I’m OK with that. It has a good body for the style and a well rounded and satisfyingly malty flavor profile. There is just a hint of a metallic taste on the finish which makes this brew somewhat less than perfect, but it is a fascinating, unusual and enjoyable one-off beer.

Review based on the BJCP2015 guidelines (style 32A). Bottle 50 cl - Batch LAC. AROMA: a forward smoke aroma, just to offset a grainy-malty background and almost in balance. hop aromas not perceptible. APPEARANCE: pale gold color and translucent. average creamy white head with good retention. TASTE: initial sweet malt flavor with a grainy character, mixed with a moderate smokiness. restrained medium-low bitterness with a semi-dry and slight smoky finish. good balance. clean lager profile. PALATE: medium-low body with moderate carbonation. OVERALL: a nice munich helles with a balanced smoky twist.

Crisp and refreshing like a good lager but with a healthy dose of smoke. Bit of smokey bacon on the nose and trip that no smoked malts were used to brew this. One of the best from the brewery. Not as fierce as the others yet the dangerously drinkable.
