COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION

Daten:
Stammwürze 11,7%
Alkohol 4,5%
Bittere 30

Ausschank:
Im Brauereiausschank vom Holzfass ab 1. Juni bis Ende August. Export in die USA.

English Translation:
"Kräusen" describes the bubbles that form during the fermentation of green (young) beer. The addition of a small amount of such green beer to an already mature beer is called "Kräusening". Kräusening adds the full flavor maturity of the stored beer to the liveliness of the green beer that is added.

Schlenkerla Kräusen is an amber, unfiltered lager with a slight smoky taste. It ripens in the deep tunnels under Bamberg until just before adding the classic Schlenkerla smoked beer. Tasty and not too much alcohol, it is the perfect refreshment for a warm season.
Data:
Original gravity 11.7%
Alcohol 4.5%
Bitter 30

Serving:
In the brewery from the keg from 1 June to late August. Exports to the United States.

Tap @ Brauerei. Hazy orange body with a small white head. Taste is malty, a bit tart. Refreshing, but nothing special IMHO

A very nice "light" smoked beer. Lighter than the classic Märzen with a nice white head. The smell is still very smoky, but not as much as a Märzen. Nice burnt wood smell and some "green" beer aroma also. A light beer with a nice smoky taste that is well balanced with the young beer character.

Draught @ the brewery. Pours super hazy, dark orange, with a creamy white head. First of all: Incredible mouthfeel! Super duper smooth! Low carbonation. Almost flat. Only slightly smoked (the aroma more so). Notes of apricots, syrup, elderflowers, caramel and flour. Small bitterness in the aftertaste. Super drinkable!

(on tap @ Zlý Časy, Prague) Dark golden colour, almost clear, with a foamy white head. Very pleasing moderate smokiness, reminds me of tobacco leaves and leather. Lightly bitter taste. Light-bodied beer, good for summer, but very aromatic nonetheless. Probably the only smoked beer from that brewery that could drink all evening long, especially in summer. Great!

Had this draught at the brewery on the morning of June 1, and as I was the only one there when they opened the doors at 9:30, I may have even had the first (public) glass from the barrel. This is not to say it was acquired without much bitching and moaning from the staff, especially in getting the right glassware. Cloudy golden with a lacing rocky, Orvallish cream head, but wait, not just cloudy, but really turbid and churning. Beautiful light smoky nose, more like their Helles Lager, with nice graininess. Taste, too, is mild and gentle rather on pace with the light, gentle smoke and really more of a woodiness. The smoke is backed off but the rustic yeast is really allowed to shine through. Just as quaffable as any Franconia country lager, moreso than their normal Märzen. A simple gift, though the older gentlemen who joined me later didn’t seem to think much of it and rather gummed in their standard morning Rauchbier.

UPDATED: JUN 29, 2012 Tap @ Huber Haus Omaha. A bit hazy, golden orange appearance with an off white head. Somewhat mild meaty smoky, sweet, somewhat fruity, apple aroma. More apple in the flavor with a smoked hot dog note. Some honey and biscuit malts, but I’m overpowered by the weird fruit notes. Kind of a strange beer from these folks but not entirely unenjoyable.

UPDATED: APR 13, 2012 draft. multiple glasses at Churchkey in DC, Feb2012. this is the helles lager krausened with young marzen wort. appearance is a turbid dull light orange. a patchy white head diminishes into a fine-bubbled layer of foam after a few moments. the nose is mild and neutral with sweet grains (pils malt sweet honey/biscuit character with a light touch of munich/vienna toffee charater), low hop bitterness and moderate yeast presence (mild banana, mild floral esters); what’s more surprising is just how frothy and apparently "dense" it becomes after kruausening (comparing to the base helles), at least up front and across the middle. this is a beer that seems remarkably light and restrained but with an apparent weight and roundness to the mouthfeel (again, across the middle); it’s *almost* right where I want it, only needing a bit more depth late (it’s noticeably watery and thin on the back) and perhaps with a touch less green (sweet wort) character. the mild smoke present in the regular helles is more muted here given the presence of yeast, no surprise. flavor-wise this is quite easy to enjoy and session, however through multiple glasses I never felt that it was together enough; a little too muted and a lot less clean and snappy compared to the helles. still, minor complaints. it is a joy to drink unfiltered German lager from the keg here in the states, and I would happily drink as much of this as I could.

Sampled on tap at The Beer Mongers, courtesy of Jim, pours a clear blonde with a medium white head. Aroma of smoke / firepit, wet horse and lager yeast. Flavour is the same with a light body. Decent, if you’re into this type of thing.
