blankboy (2562), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Aug 16, 2006 Bottle. This should be interesting, the first time I had this (before I was rating) I hated it so much that I recapped it and walked it over to GregClow’s house and gave it to him. I’ve since then grown to like many Smoked beers so I hope that bodes well for this one. Pours a clear deep ruby-amber with a large mostly lasting foamy off-white head. Aroma is, of course, very smokey and almost ham or bacon-like along with, well, it’s hard to detect anything else really -- there’s some malt and wood and...I’ll leave the rest to others with a better sense of smell. Flavour is the part that scares me as I have that lingering memory of hating it so much. Here goes. Ah yes, my tastes have definitely changed: I like it! Along with all the smokyness there’s a nice amount of sweet malt and some light hops in the finish. Light to medium bodied. I’m happy I gave it another try and though I still don’t love it (I MUCH prefer the Alaskan Smoked Porter) and I wouldn’t want more than one, I still liked it.
roder_60 (871), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 17, 2008 Pours a beautiful clear dark amber brown with medium layer of froathy offwhite head. Aroma reminds me a lot of hickory smoked beef jerky with a little extra brown sugar and honey on it. Mouthfeel is surprisingly light. Flavor nice sweet light flavor then comes a big meaty smoked flavor and a slight roasted bitter finish. Overall, excellent beer. DrDavid (117), , Vermont, USA Aug 17, 2008 (Bottle). Intense smoked Italian ham aroma. Color a gorgeous dark reddish brown. Flavor a symphony of smoke, malt, and hops, without undo bitterness until the finish when a slight smoky bitterness emerges. Fantastic stuff. MonsterMunch (3), Newbridge, Ireland does not count Aug 12, 2008 My first foray into smoked beer and with pure luck. Extremely flavoursome, distinctive smell of a strong peaty whiskey lwith a flavour like a cross between smoking tobacco and pipe tobacco but without being bitter. Excellent beer, one i will be recommending. Bigmmartin (185), Dayton, Ohio, USA Aug 12, 2008 Bottle. Haven’t tried too many smoked or marzen beers. But this one seems to be pretty high quality. Looks great, with a dark red color and a thick tan head. Aroma is intense, smokey campfire. Nice smoked woody malt flavors. Lots of character, but not my favorite style. I can appreciate it for what it is though. VitaminR (259), Colorado, USA Aug 10, 2008 Oily smoky nose, some brown sugar notes. Color was dark brown with a hint of red, the head was large and tan. Taste is malty sugar and smoke, not sure if the bitterness comes from hops or the smokiness, but felt very well balanced in its flavor. Had decent carbonation, medium mouth feel, and a long smooth finish. This is a very unique and tasty beer. The smokiness is not overwhelming, it plays with the other flavors well and has complexity. Would pair excellently with the right foods such as BBQ, any smoked meat, and I would guess maybe chocolate? Worth a try for sure!
