notalush (2077), Rawn-kawn-kohma, New York, USA Jun 14, 2007 Updated: May 9, 2008 I f you had told me two years ago that I would be raising my score for this beer to a near perfect score, I would have laughed in your face - but I’ve been drinking this beer at least once a week for months, and it just keeps getting better - if that isn’t reason enough for such a great score, I don’t know what is[man, the more I have of this beer, the more perfect I think it is - strong smoke, sure, but it has a balance that surpasses all other schlunkerla beers - this stuff is nearly perfect - I never get tired of it, not matter how often I drink it] I can’t believe I’ve never rated this stuff - oh well, better late than never - beautiful ruby hue, with minimal head, but lasting lace - powerful aroma of beechwood and hickory smoke (so natural you’d swear you were around a campfire), with background caramel and munich malt sweetness, and some subtle fruity notes - smooth, creamy mouthfeel, with medium carbonation - the smokiness in the flavor is exactly as the aroma makes you expect it will taste - very natural and earthy - mild hop bitterness through the middle - medium-bodied, with light fruitiness and a caramel sweetness that balances perfectly with the hops, smoked malt, and woody notes - with this many ratings, there’s nothing new that can be said - it’s just a wonderful beer.
Clear, Medium sized quickly disappearing white. Smoky and malty nose. Full bodied palte with medium carbonation. Smoke, malts, sweetness, salty liquorice and bitterness in taste. Smoky and sweet long lasting aftertaste. TET (133), Finland Oct 3, 2008 Dark brown beer with compact and medium beige head. Aroma is temptating: tarliquorice "tervaleijona" -candy in finnish, smoke and hint of sweetness. Flavour is quite dry, smoked and some tarliquorice is left from the aroma. Surprisingly, quite easy to drink, assumed that smokeness could be produce more "heavier" palate. More fullness and tar could be give something more in to this beer, but then it would be Urbock, so easier and lighter brilliant Märzen is relevant beer, however. ucusty (1214), Wake Forest, North Carolina, USA Sep 30, 2008 Clear, dark brown pour with tan head. Campfire on the nose. Medium bodied and well balanced. Complex flavor with notable hints of peat, oak, bacon, sausage, leather and a lingering campfire finish. Beerlando (1352), Orlando, Florida, USA Sep 29, 2008 Updated: Oct 1, 2008The pour yields a translucent chestnut brown body with a moderate, frothy, beige colored head. The well retained foam leaves soapy flares and spots behind. Aromas include smoked caramel malt, dry cocoa, earthy hazelnuts and hints of charred oak. There is a good amount of cola-like molasses sweetness in there as well. Flavors are earthy smoky, with scorched caramel, charred oak, and hints of worn leather all coming through. Some vanilla seeps in from the oak, which works well with that sweet and smoky molasses. There’s excellent balance going on here, and the medium bodied, well carbonated palate just enhances things. This is a great smoked brew, very reminiscent of the Aecht Schlenkerla Fastenbier.
