willblake (1932), Long Branch, New Jersey, USA Jun 29, 2004 06.29.04 Bottle. This beer has been a standby and a favorite for a long time. As I sit tonight enjoying yet another, I realize that I’ve yet to make any notes about the stuff - a testament to how wrapped up I get in Schlenkerla every time I drink one. I find this beer to be nearly perfect in every way. The appearance is a truly dignified burnt copper looking gold, like some ancient but charred fossil-amber. The head is small, but it lasts throughout the glass. The aromas are magnificent. This beer reminds of my summers in Montana, campfires, forest fires in neighboring valleys, and enjoying smoked and cured meats from last season’s hunt. The flavors are big and roasted and full of more smoke. At the beer rounds out on the palate, a brine emerges and drops of with a resounding bitterness. Yet smoke reigns throughout and there is never a question the intent of this beer. On of my very favorite beers. Amazing.
michael-pollack (1394), King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 4, 2008 500ml Bottle: Nice smoke aroma that smells of a smoke-house, candle-smoke, smoked cheese, ski lodge, and a hint of burning logs. Poured dark amber/medium brown in color with a large, dense, rocky, tan head that shrank but lasted throughout. Clear. Not sparkling. Good lacing. Flavor of smoke, smoke-house, candle-smoke, smoked cheese, ski lodge, and a hint of burning logs. Medium body. Smooth, creamy texture. Soft carbonation. Smoke smoke smoke finish. Even though I am not a big smoked beer fan, the smokiness and the complexity of the flavor in this beer really impressed me. jonsiii (150), Fredericia, Denmark Sep 4, 2008 Bottle 50 cl. Dark brown colour, large bubbly head. Lots of smoke in aroma and taste. Low on carbonation. Easy drinkable. EricE (233), Beltsville, New Jersey, USA Sep 2, 2008 Brown pour with a dark red tint. Clear with light tan head. Very smoky, woody aroma with malt. Bitter malt flavor with tons of smoke. At first it reminds you of some good barbecue but after drinking half a glass I felt like I had just smoked half a pack of cigarettes. Maybe this just isn’t my style. jfb (42), Freising, Germany Sep 1, 2008 (bottle) clear, dark ruby-brown colour, wonderful head. aroma is an assortment of heavily smoked dark meats over a herbal hoppy background. the beer is smooth with mild carbonation. a solid malt base and the herbal hop bitterness promote the dominant flavours: smoked meat, grilled sausage and a faint woodiness. a wonderfully smooth, well-balanced beer! ansermadide (188), Kyle, Texas, USA Aug 31, 2008 (From bottle at home on August 24, 2008 with weeAnaP with prune stuffed pork) Light, creamy white head atop a dark mohogany semi-clear smoky delicasy. No carbonation. Aroma is of super smoky barbecue. Can’t tell the real difference between this and the urbock. Flavor is PERFECT with prune-stuffed pork loin! WeeAnaP loved it!!! She said, "yummy!" Yep... smoky goodness and uber-yummy!
