COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bamberg’s speciality, a dark, bottom fermented smokebeer, brewed with Original Schlenkerla Smokemalt from the Schlenkerla maltings and tapped according to old tradition directly from the gravity-fed oakwood cask in the historical brewery tavern.

Slightly less intense version of Schlenkerla’s Urbock, quite good and would work well both cold or at room temperature as opposed to the Urbock which I would never drink cold under any circumstances. Probably a bit better for beginners or those not used to smoked beer.

Deep smoky aroma, like smoked sausage or bologna or other fatty smoked meats. Brown to darkish red in color with small off-white head. Medium carb with medium oily palate. Sweetish start (like a light maerzen) with medium hops character. Sweet smoky fatty finish and after. One of the best smoked beers I’ve tried (though I haven’t tried many yet).

The smokey aroma reminds me too much of smoked meat for me to really enjoy too much. However, the overall taste isn’t too bad, I just don’t personally like the smell.

Pretty good. The smokiness acts a bit like hops, adding pleasant bitterness. The underlying beer seemed fruity and nice, though too simple.

Man, I love rauchbier. I have previously had the Ur-Bock and the Weiss, this is the first time I have had the Marzen. I noticed that it got the lowest rating of the three, and I have to agree with this. While this rauchbier is very good, the other two are better. This one is not as complex as the others. It is very smoky, with a bitter smoke finish, but the beer itself is not tasted as much as with the other Schlenkerla offerings. Still, I would take this over almost any beer in the world.

UPDATED: JUL 27, 2010 Bottle. Head is initially average sized, frothy, light brown, mostly lasting. Body is medium to dark brown. Aroma is moderately malty (toasted dark bread, roasted grain), with a strong note of savory smoke (meat and wood). Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly bitter. Finish is moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Finally the Maerzen and Urbock are back in fine form after several years of getting poor samples locally...I’d almost lost all hope. The Urbock is assuredly more satisfying, and the Weizen more interesting/unique, but the Maerzen is a perfectly serviceable smoked lager, and more suited to quaffing than the Urbock. Very high quality smoke character, combo of sweet charred wood and smoked meat...none of the acrid, cigarette ash smoke smell of lesser examples. Yummy.

This beer is much more smoked sausage tasting than like a normal beer. It is enjoyable for a depart from normal beer tastes. Smoky smooth with roasted nutty hints.

Pours a beautiful deep clear garnet, the head is frothy, long lasting, the lace clings to the glass in sheets. The nose is ’SMOKIN’ Like Hams from the Hills of Virginia, malt, caramel. Front is sweet, the top medium, the finish is lightly acidic, a tad dry, nicely hopped, and quite pleasant. Thanks Herbjones - Do me a favor and tell your dad: ’This Dinky Dau Squid is going snoopin and poopin at zero dark thirty, on Friday once the Eagle Shits, found a place that has ba mui ba and ham and mothers, owned by a retired gunny cannon cocker, see if he want’s any? Ranks #219 on my current 1000 master beer list.

Yep, it smells like smoked meat. Like really, good, brown sugar cured, smoked pork or something. It only took me one sip to get beyond the smoky surface and into the remarkable characteristics underneath. I like the smokiness, and I love the quality of this beer despite its quirks (it seems many people just can’t get past the smoke). Next time I have this it will be with pancakes.

Much more pronounced smoke than in the Weizen, in the aroma but especially the flavor, or maybe it’s because the underlying style is a bit more subtle than a weizen. Either way, I can’t get much from here, except, as Pivo says, it seems to be high quality. The palate is nice and light.
