Bamberg’s speciality, a dark, bottom fermented smokebeer, brewed with Original Schlenkerla Smokemalt from the Schlenkerla maltings and tapped according to old tradition directly from the gravity-fed oakwood cask in the historical brewery tavern.

Donkerbruine kleur en een mooie plakkerige kraag. Ruikt naar rook, as , gerookte ham. Smaakt idem en vrij bitter. Rokerige nasmaak. Wat weinig body helaas. Goed te drinken.

Smoky and meaty like nobody’s business but still plenty of caramel malt and spicy hops shining through.

Pours dark copper. The beer sports a tan head of medium size and medium-long lifetime and manages to leave a little lacing behind. The nose is mainly smoky - the kind of smoke you’d expect from Black Forest ham - while notes of sweetish caramel malts are hidden underneath. The flavor pretty much follows the bouquet: sweet caramel malts overpowered by smoke, grassy hop on the mid-palate overpowered by smoke, woody flavor overpowered by smoke, leading to a meaty ham finish with a lot of smoke. I find it interesting how much I associate the flavor with ham although the beer actually tastes nothing like pork. It’s just that this particular kind of smokiness is such a prominent component in both this beer and German raw ham. Just a side note. Man, this beer is smoky. The smoke almost made the creamy texture, medium body, and soft carbonation escape me. OK, obviously not everybody will like this, and the score (in my case 3.8) is even less meaningful than usual. Neither this review, nor any other, nor any number given to this beer can tell you whether you’ll like it or not, but it’s definitely worth a try just for the heck of it.

Clear dark amber appearance, medium head. Strong smoke aroma, caramel. Decent bodied with round sweetness and bitterness. Prolonged smoked finish. Very good Smoked style beer.

From bottle to lager glass. Pour is a deep copper color, almost brown with a very thick off-white head. Nose is big smoke, roasted malt, light hop, caramel. Taste is light medium bodied, mostly sour. Big smoky flavor as well. Finishes nice and crisp, smoke is powerful on the mouth. Cool mix of style on the marzen, definitely would recommend this.

An aroma of sweet cereal grains, bread yeast, and smoky bacon. Appears a clear deep copperish brown with off white foam and some lace. Tastes of bacon smoke and sweet cereal grains with a hint of grassy bitterness. Palate is fizzy and nice. Overall, a very nice Rauch bier.

Bottle. Pitch black. No head or lace. Nose is pure campfire--very woodsmokey. Thinnish. Strong woodsmoke, roasty malts, mild chocolate.

Dark reddish brown with thick cream head. Aroma of salty smoke with roasted malts. Little carbonation, fullish body. Taste fairly saline, light bitter and sweetness. Pretty good but not refreshing.

Ruby brown color with a big tan foamy head. Little or no carbonation that I can see. Smokey aroma dominates everything else here aroma wise. There is a sutle roasted malt aroma. Very smokey with some roasted malt flavors. The smoked malt doesn’t overpower the beer but instead inhances the flavor. Medium body beer with a dry finish. The flavor also reminds me of smoked cheese if you ever had it. A good drinkable beer but in limited amounts.
