Bamberg’s speciality, a dark, bottom fermented smokebeer, brewed with Original Schlenkerla Smokemalt from the Schlenkerla maltings and tapped according to old tradition directly from the gravity-fed oakwood cask in the historical brewery tavern.

Poured into a tulip glass. Copper color, almost opaque. Nice inch and half of dirty-white head. Well, as I poured it I could smell the smoke. It is like being at a campfire as only the embers are glowing with no flames. Amazing. Smoky grain taste, light hop bitterness at the end. Very smooth flavor. Soft, medium body, moderate carbonation. A little less carbonation would be nicer for me, but it does not hold the beer back at all. Excellent. Easy to drink and hits the Rauchbier notes perfectly (it is the original apparently).

Nearly black, thick, persistent off-white froth, smells like smoked ham, malty. Medium carbonation, smoky, slightly sweet. Very pleasant.

Pours a dark brown with some ruby shining through it. There is a a medium off white head that had good retention and left a lot of lacing. The aroma is smokey, meaty, and bacon. The taste is is very similar to the aroma. I believe it is a little less smokey/meaty compared to the urbock giving it a little more drink ability.

500 ml bottle @ Hair of the Dog Toronto. Pours a dark reddish/brown with a minimal off-white head. Powerful smoke and cured-meat aromas. Umami and campfire smoke dominate the palate. Surprisingly thin body for such huge flavours. Medium to heavy carbonation and a fairly assertive medium smoky finish. Decent beer but not terribly complex. I enjoyed it but probably didn't need the whole 500 ml. Based on the look on my wife's face after trying it it was apparent she wouldn't be helping much! ---Rated via Beer Buddy

When poured into the glass it produces a dense rocky tan head. The beer itself is red-brown coloured. The flavour is rich in smoke, bacon and some hops. Aromas of smoke, bacon, malt and a little bit of realy dark chocolate, some earthy hops and smoke in the aftertaste. Good carbonation, enough to keep it refreshing. Probably THE icon of franconian smoked beer. I can recommend it.

UPDATED: MAY 12, 2015 Tap @ fermentoren Aarhus. Pours dark brown amber with a beige head. Aroma of meat, smoked sausages, weak bacon, leather, caramel malts and of course smoke! the taste has lots of umami and meat notes. also some smoked malts, caramel, leather and some dry grainy notes. One of the better smoked beer but I guess this is just not my style...

Dark brown with tan head. Smoke, sausage, caramel and floral. Slick, ash and meaty finish with nice noble hop bite. Overall: Chill incarnated. Very balanced and not as smokey as some say.

Great smoked smell, dark brown appearance, not quite as smooth and good as their urbock which is amazing..little more tang and crispness on this one...still good but not great..wish finish was maltier and smoother
