Bamberg’s speciality, a dark, bottom fermented smokebeer, brewed with Original Schlenkerla Smokemalt from the Schlenkerla maltings and tapped according to old tradition directly from the gravity-fed oakwood cask in the historical brewery tavern.

My first rauchbier. Smells like bacon, tastes like slow cooked ribs. The smoke isn’t so dominating in the flavor, it is a well balanced component of the malty flavor, not the only flavor in the beer. Quite tasty

50cl bottles fresh, aged 1yo 9/2014 (bb09/2013) and on draught@source. Strange that Heller’s standard offering of their trademark Rauchbier is technically a Märzen at a 5,1%...otherwise this is as rich and flavourful as Franconian standard fair gets, truly stellar in its sessionability. Beechwood-blackened salmon dunked in an Islay malt-inspired Franconian Keller. Lush dry caramels, a creamy palate do not hinder prime gulpability. A masterpiece in character and simplicity of quality ingredients., to be had at a lower abv payoff than their gorgeous Urbock. - Holds up rather well given its original richness, although it doesn’t gain much in taste either.

Aroma: smoked fish, sausage; Appearance: clear dark red, average brown foamy head; Taste: medium bitterness, medium sweetness, medium sourness; Palate: average carbonation, long finish, oily texture, medium body Well-rounded beer, thoroughly smoked. Terrific, intense aroma. Drinkable. A bit too much carbonation in the beginning. Paired with canned tuna on rice and green peas was terrific. The beer highlighted hot pepper and curry that I added to the food.

Absolutely fantastic smokey flavour! It tastes almost like that you’re eating bacon. Real good beer with both medium sweetness and bitternes.

50 cl bottle from my local Comarket in Tallinn (€ 3,11), Sept 2014. BB 12/2014. Pours a reddish brown with a small light tan head that laces and retains nicely. Nose... it’s smoked ham. Really difficult to get anything else from behind that... After a while the "hamness" steps back a bit, giving way to a more malty aroma that together with the remnants of this smoky ham make a very enjoyable mixture. And yea, it makes me want ham. Taste is rather sweet with nice low key bitterness, whereas the smoky dryness only appears in the finish. A bit of a downer really, after the full aroma. Body is quite light, carbonation just right between average and soft. Dry, somewhat grainy mouthfeel. I’ve grown to like it.

A much darker pour than the Doppelbock, it pours a deep reddish brown with about an inch of foam. It shrinks quickly and leaves better lacing. Almost as smokey on the nose as the DB with less secondary aromas. Served cold, so maybe that explains it. Smoother taste though still quite smokey. So smooth, I can’t seem to pull any other flavours out of this Marzen so I’ll give up trying. Close to perfection for the mouth feel. This one, I reckon I could possibly drink another bottle of, back to back. Delightful it is.

Appearance: Very dark amber color, head white but not so stron. Aroma: mostly roast ham and roast cheese, caramel, toasted bread. Taste: good balance beetwen sweetness and bitterness. Body is too light for me. Finish is bitter.

Bottle at home, 19th September 2014. Bought in Munich, strong smokey malty aroma, with slight metallic and iodine notes, inviting. Taste is smooth smokiness, burnt bacon, charred barbecue, really works, and metallic aroma does not translate in the mouth. Great beer and a nice change to the series of IPAs, I had the same evening

500ml bottle into a tumbler. Pours a deep brownish mahogany with a slight off-white head. Strong aroma of smoke and oakiness, and light malt. Smoky malt flavour with some caramel, slight sweetness. Medium body and smooth. The be all and end all of smoked beers still has yet to be trumped.

Clear cola brown body with a beige medium sized head. Aroma is malt, strong smoke, dark fruits. Taste is sweet with light bitterness. Medium to thin body, a bit of a thin texture, some spice aftertaste.

Bottle and tap. Not much too say. The benchmark for all smoked beers. The perfect balance of smokey, roasted and malty flavours. For sure an extreme beer but highly drinkable.
