Bamberg’s speciality, a dark, bottom fermented smokebeer, brewed with Original Schlenkerla Smokemalt from the Schlenkerla maltings and tapped according to old tradition directly from the gravity-fed oakwood cask in the historical brewery tavern.

A: Foam gushing out of the top of the bottle. Cola brown. Frothy off-white head. S: Smoked bacon. T: Very chocolaty. Smokey bacon. Half sweet. Vinous chocolaty aftertaste. M: Very lively. O: Not as bacon tasting as other Rauchbiers I've had. Pretty good but not something I'd have without food. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Vom Holzfass@ Schlenkerla Bamberg.

This beer pours a dark reddish brown with a medium off-white head that fades slowly, and the aroma blends roasted malts with smoke. The taste is slightly sour and slightly bitter with an aftertaste that is purely smoke. The palate has a soft carbonation, then texture, and a medium-light body.

UPDATED: DEC 11, 2014 Crystal brown/reddish color with a generous fluffy white head. Aromas is rich in smoked meat and bacon, with a sweet malt backgorund. Taste is very rich, with smoked meat, bacon and slightly dark fruits ans sweet malts. Can’t find any bitter trace in this beer. Very solid.

A surprisingly dark brown (like strong black iced tea), with a medium-fine, tan head that fades to a small ring quickly. Aroma is grassy smoke with some light, grainy malt sweetness. Evokes smoked salmon. Body is medium light, on the watery side, with a medium-heavy carbonation, moderate-to-intense burn. Flavor is medium-light smokiness with some spicy grass and grain. Less sweet tasting, even a bit thin (especially compared with my expectations from the bocks by Schlenkerla). Lots of woody tannins (but certainly not any vanilla/oak). Overall, a nice smoked beer with a lighter body and flavor (despite appearances). Not as impressive or delicious as the bigger beers in this lineup (like the urbock).

You think it’s black, but against the light it is cherrywood brown. Very thin off-white head. No measurable lacing. Aromas of camp fires, burning wood, smoke, and a hint of bacon, and smoked meats. A slightly surprising medium mouth feel, with a slight oiliness.. A lot more of the aromas are on the palate, with a sneaky sweet maltiness lurking under it all. No hop presence that I can detect. A few years back, this was my first smoke beer, and years later, nothing has beaten it yet in this category.

Clear beautiful deep autumn auburn color with a fair beige head. The signature smokiness I’ve come to love and appreciate from this series. Soft. That great campfire character. Tremendous. A great drinkable smoke.

super smoky, but a fresh smoky, like the fire is burning strongly and the sausages were just cooked, not like how your sweatshirt smells in the morning. Strong but smooth, light, leaves a great rustic/smoky tastes in the back of your mouth.
