Smells exactly like smoked gouda. Looks great, but taste is too much for me. Very complex, yet very nasty... to me atleast. Prob. won’t buy again.

Kolor: Mocnej herbaty. Piwo jest klarowne. Piana: Drobnopęcherzykowa, obfita, trwała. Pięknie oblepia szkło. Aromat: Wędzonka bukowa, zapach grilla, kiełbasy, boczku. Aromat jest przyjemny i dość intensywny. Minimalna nutka żelazista. Na teście skórnym wyłazi ewidentne żelazo. Smak: Niska goryczka. Szczerze polecam.

Wooden keg at Schlenkerla in Bamberg. "Smoked beer ... come on, this is going to be terrible." Yet there I was, so I ordered one with a plate of Limburger cheese. The wooden keg in the corner provided a nice glass with a great volume of foam. Very clear beer coming from a wooden keg I was somewhat surprised. Smell is smoky, but not overly so. Surprisingly drinkable and went perfectly with the cheese, which was served with a sweet vinegar sauce and onions. It was so good I had another for dessert. I’ve had this in bottle before and wasn’t a fan, but on tap in Bamberg .... really a great beer.

Keg at Beergeek. In bottles previously. This beer is quite remarkable. I like it in small measures but a whole bottle tends to be too much for me. It pours a clear Amber colour with a beige head. The aroma is striking. Heavy Bamberg smoke which reminds me immediately of ’Frazzles’ brand bacon crisps. The flavour is so dominated by the smoke. It’s very nice in smaller doses.

Smoke and tar in aroma. Very pleasant. Clear dark Brown colour. Nice head. Light bitterness, creamy mouthfeel. Lots of taste and a creamy feel combining for a great beer.

Used to drink in this ancient Bamberg gasthaus back in the 1960’s with the beer poured right out of the oak casks. Never really a favorite of mine, I had to retry it after enjoying and rating the nearby Fort Hill brewery’s rauchbier. The Schlenkerla is a far deeper brew, more robust and full bodied than its American cousin, but of course, they’ve had centuries to refine it. Definitely a different style of beer.

Barwa ciemno brunatna, piana obfita i trwała.

16.9oz bottle, shared with friend, poured into tulip glass

Aroma: Smoke, caramel malt

Appearance: Brown, dark amber color, nice head, off white

Taste: sweet, malty, but nice balance

Palate: soft, medium to full body

Overall: Another nice smoked beer. Very drinkable. Nice Marzen. Somewhat malty, but not overdone. Overall, very nice beer and one that I’d love to drink near a campfire and makes me think of a campfire setting even when sitting at a dinner table.
