Dark amber body. Strong smoky aroma. The aroma is very similar to the taste. If you are in the mood for a great rauchbier this is a must try. I have had quite a few rauchbiers from various microbreweries, but this one is probably my favorite.

From bottle to lager glass. Pour is a deep copper color, almost brown with a very thick off-white head. Nose is big smoke, roasted malt, light hop, caramel. Taste is light medium bodied, mostly sour. Big smoky flavor as well. Finishes nice and crisp, smoke is powerful on the mouth. Cool mix of style on the marzen, definitely would recommend this.

An aroma of sweet cereal grains, bread yeast, and smoky bacon. Appears a clear deep copperish brown with off white foam and some lace. Tastes of bacon smoke and sweet cereal grains with a hint of grassy bitterness. Palate is fizzy and nice. Overall, a very nice Rauch bier.

Bottle. Pitch black. No head or lace. Nose is pure campfire--very woodsmokey. Thinnish. Strong woodsmoke, roasty malts, mild chocolate.

Dark reddish brown with thick cream head. Aroma of salty smoke with roasted malts. Little carbonation, fullish body. Taste fairly saline, light bitter and sweetness. Pretty good but not refreshing.

Ruby brown color with a big tan foamy head. Little or no carbonation that I can see. Smokey aroma dominates everything else here aroma wise. There is a sutle roasted malt aroma. Very smokey with some roasted malt flavors. The smoked malt doesn’t overpower the beer but instead inhances the flavor. Medium body beer with a dry finish. The flavor also reminds me of smoked cheese if you ever had it. A good drinkable beer but in limited amounts.

The most classic of the old German Rauchbiers, applying a 16th-century Bamberg production method of smoking malt over a fire of beechwood. Pale beige, irregular, not very stable foam over a clear, deep bronze colour. Extremely powerful aroma which can hardly be mistaken for anything else (except for the two other Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbiers, that is); I will never forget my first encounter with this brew and my amazement of finding smoked ham, smoked herring, smoldering ashes of beech wood, broth and charcoal in the aroma, adorned by subtle tones of sweet malt and peppery hops. Tastes begins softly malty with a mineral-like accent but is quickly overpowered by the assertive smokiness, woodiness, peatiness and meatiness, to the extent that one could even describe its main character as almost salty, a taste rarely found in any beverage... Finish adds some grassy hops, but the smokiness remains overpowering till the last gulp, utterly dry and very, very long. An acquired taste and one I’ll never forget, but a delightfully old-fashioned world classic from Bavaria.

Tasting @ Devonshire Cat, Sheffield. Pours dark amber with creamy head and smoky nose. Definite smokey bacon, with beechwood and well-balanced smoked malt, mellowing to a comfortable level throughout the glass. Works great with smoked salmon, the richness of the fish accentuating the malt character of the beer. A classic and long may it remain so.

Bottle from the LCBO served in a classic McDonalds Snow White tumbler, what else do you drink out of at the cottage? It’s the proper glass isn’t it? Pours a very dark, clear, amber with a couple of fingers of tan head that reduces to a half finger with lacing. Big smoke smell with a little baked beans and malt in the back. Big smoke on the taste, kinda sausage-like. Actually very sausage-like. Some saltiness and softer malts.
