KingofCastle (189), London, Ontario, Canada Jul 29, 2006 Updated: Aug 21, 2006 500 mL Bottle: What crap! The official beer of Hell, or the prefect brew if you find yourself trapped in a smoker? Words cannot express how completely UNDRINKABLE this is. The aroma says it all: you will be choking back liquid smoke. On the positives: it is "smoke" beer & I have no doubts somebody burnt the crap out of this. However, I don’t see how anyone could enjoy this: it is almost the opposite of liquid, no refreshment value whatsoever. I wouldn’t even recommend this as a novelty food product (forget beer for a second). Overwhelming & unpalatable smoke taste makes all other factors irrelevant. You can’t have 1 flavour completely overwhelming the taste or it is ruined. It boggles my mind this has any ratings above 1.0. You’ve all gone mad. Give me an abusive warning page: people must be warned!
DandyWolfFloyd (272), Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania, USA Nov 20, 2008 Supersmoke! Aroma full of smoked beechwood, ok that’s the safe answer, really it’s liquid smoke. Like a smokehouse, like a smoked ham, like beef jerky, for real. It’s color is a dark brown, with no head at all. Flavor is full absolutely with smoked ham being the most prominent, but is that the best. It’s a 9 for me, because although its crazy it’s a one and done specialty. Palate is smooth considering, but your not pounding this. A great one and done. fredandboboflo (695), East Setauket, New York, USA Nov 1, 2008 Bottle. Aroma crazy with singed earth, smoldering firewood, smoked meats. Flavor smoky with sweet malt, some nuttiness. Very nice. LilBeerDoctor (709), East Setauket, USA Nov 1, 2008 Bottle. Pours a clear mahoghany brown with a small ring off off-white head. Aroma of smoke, smoked ham and smoked sausage. Flavor is more smokey and less meaty. Super tasty though! Just the right amount of smoke. Nice and drinkable. Yum! tarheels86 (123), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA Oct 30, 2008 500 mL bottle. pours a dark, crystal clear brown with very low carbonation (almost none) and a very small and quickly disappearing Coke-like head. Aroma is bacon, honey ham, baked beans, and smoke. Much more watery on the palate compared to the Urbock with less of a punch. Taste is actually fairly light with some sweet malt in there with the barbecue flavors. Smoked malt and campfire pervade throughout. Very little in the way of balancing hops. Fairly long aftertaste of smoke, bacon water, baked beans, and ham. Pretty interesting but I’m not sure if I would try it again. Perhaps my bottle is old since there is no carbonation whatsoever. But probably will stick to the Urbock nevertheless. ChainGangGuy (1683), Kennesaw, Georgia, USA Oct 27, 2008 Appearance: Pours a chestnut brown body with a thin, thinning, bubbly white head.
Smell: Bacon, though definitely top-quality bacon. You know me, I’m definitely down with the bacon.
Taste: Sweetish, rich dark caramel maltiness prior to the smoked meat flavor hitting hard and fast. There’s some dark fruits present, but, again, you gotta look long and hard past those smoked malts. Thin vein of roastiness and even woody character throughout. Never much in the way of hops or substantial bitterness though. Oh, the ham. Oh, the sweet barbecue flavors. Finishes ultimately smoke with a mouthful of cub scout campfire ashes.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium-low carbonation.
Drinkability: An enjoyable beer, a smoke-minded treat even, but not one I could down on a daily basis. Such a smokey, bacon-laden flavor and aroma that it might be even more recommended to friends of the Jewish persuasion. Paired well with some chicken pan fried noodles. The driver refused to partake in the beer once he smelled it.
