Rated 2004-02-04. Dark brown, big beige head which lowers slowly, moderate lace. Very smoky, ham-like, malty, tar and wooden aroma. Pretty full-bodied. Malty and smoky, slightly ham-like, sweet flavor with notes of tar and wood. Long and smoky finish. Very nice smoked beer, especially aroma is nice.

Bottle and tap. Not much too say. The benchmark for all smoked beers. The perfect balance of smokey, roasted and malty flavours. For sure an extreme beer but highly drinkable.

Review based on the BJCP2008 guidelines (style 22A). Bottle 50 cl - Batch LTK. AROMA: very present smoked aroma reminiscent of burnt wood. Very faint malt aroma with no esters and no hop aromas. APPEARANCE: dark ruby color and translucid. rich and creamy tanned head with medium-low retention. TASTE: smoky flavour balanced with a slight sweet malty background. clean lager profile. very low bitterness. finishes medium-dry. PALATE: medium-low body with low carbonation. OVERALL: a nice example of a Bamberg speciality.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle at the Wellington Arms, Bedford. Chocolate brown, slightly hazy, wispy khaki head. Smoked beechwood, Marmite, dark chocolate in the aroma. Reminds me of a less fishy Ted Peters (S Pasadena, FL). sweet taste, slighter than expected. A smoky bitterness in the finish and aftertaste. The palette isn’t as full as you’d think, but it suits the beer. At any rate the carbonation carries the mouthfeel. The paradigmatic smoked beer. A bit more ABV and body and this would be elevated to godlike status.

There are few beers that can be smokier than the meat you’ve just barbecued, but this is one of them. Unbelievably delicious.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
500ml bottle. Pours a clear dark copper with a thin foamy off-white head. Flavors are smoked meat, charred wood, roasted malts, barley sugar and caramel with fruity, salty and spicy notes. Medium body, moderate carbonation, oily texture. Taste is surprisingly sweet while smoked flavors are most noticeable on the nose. Good stuff.

Poured from bottle into a pint glass
Appearance – The beer pours a reddish - copper color with a two finger billowy beige head. The head fades relatively quickly to leave some spotty lacing on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The nose is smacked with tons of big smokiness with some aromas of char. It smells of a fire and with hints of a salty aroma as well as a little bit of grass it gives an almost smoked meat like smell overall.
Taste – While the nose was massive in smoke the taste was a little tuned down, although still nice and smoky. The taste starts out with some smoky and malty flavors mixed with a bit of a lighter fruit taste. The smoke as well as the fruit grow a bit stronger in nature and mix with some lighter grassy flavors. A bit of a almost salty meat flavor develop more toward the middle to the end and when mixed with the smoky flavors produce a smoked ham sandwich like taste with a little bit of fruit flavor. Odd, but interesting.
Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is medium to slightly thicker side for a brew of only 5.4 % with a carbonation level that is rather average. Both are rather nice for the style with the slightly chewier body very nicely complimenting the smoked flavors, while the moderate carbonation was great for the overall drinkability.
Overall – Quite a tasty Rachbier with a huge smoky nose but yet rather palatable and pleasing blend of flavors beyond just smoke.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Urbock’s little brother, a lighter milder version with mostly similar aromas and flavor. The aroma is mostly smoke, toasted malt, and subtle bitter coffee. The flavor is similar with an emphasis on smoke and toasted malt. The mouthfeel is a bit thin and lacks crispness.

Um ótimo aroma defumado, senti algo como lombo defumado, espuma consistente é de cor caramelada. Combina muito bem com um parma.
