Bamberg’s speciality, a dark, bottom fermented smokebeer, brewed with Original Schlenkerla Smokemalt from the Schlenkerla maltings and tapped according to old tradition directly from the gravity-fed oakwood cask in the historical brewery tavern.

Poured the exact colour, carbonation and head as root beer. Strong smoke, barbeque sauce aroma. Thin texture. Strong smoke flavour. The first draw is surprising. Almost overpowering. Within a couple mouth fulls, the smoke mellows. A sweet flavour coming out. Mildly bitter middle and medium length finish. Very good. Nice winter beer.

500ml bottle into glass. AMAZING nose, like BBQ sauce. Clear maroon beer with small tan head. No carbonation. Tastes like a normal dark lager but the finish is all smoky sweetness. What a great beer! Really, really good. No, seriously, really good.

Appearance- nice big frothy (light) mocha colored head that lasted a good bit with (surprisingly) minimal lacing. Medium dark mahogany brown. Fairly clear. Smell- holy smoke!!! The nose was overwhelming immediately after pouring. All I can think of is the aromas experienced while waiting to be seated in a BBQ joint. Taste- bacon/pork, jerky. Mouthfeel- medium body. Smooth and creamy. Overall- good, different. Would have again but only with the right food/meal. Recommend for no other reason than to experience this unique brew. Cheers!

Permanent white foam, it’s characterised by a slightly lactic and intensely smoked aroma. The smoked taste is evident and balanced with the sweetness of the aftertaste. Bread, chocolate, toast, nuts and caramel characterise the taste of this beer.

Pours a deep amber-ruby with a decent khaki head that settles fairly quickly and leaves some spotty lace. Nose involves rich toffee-caramel malt and dark dried fruit wrapped in a fair bbq-wood smoke along with some tinny lager yeast. Somewhat sweet, a bit more bitter. Light to medium bodied, fairly oily, lower carb, tending toward an umami savory mouthwatering quality, finishing rich and smoky relative to the lightness of the beer. Very nice smoked beer, not too imposing but certainly not lacking either. A benchmark.
