Pint bottle. Pours amber with medium white head, laces. Aroma is dominated by smoke, but I also get a little bready malt. The taste is slightly sweet with the smoke contribution blending in nicely and the marzen bitter finish is still there. You kind of want a little "heavier" palate to go with the strong smoky taste, but that is only draw back I find. Good beer.

Grumbo (1367) - Ipswich, Suffolk, ENGLAND - SEP 30, 2016
Bottle at the Arcade Tavern, Ipswich. Pours mahogany brown with a lasting beige head. Aroma is smokey, very much like a smoked cheese, malty, dark fruit, hint of chocolate. Medium sweetness, light bitterness, touch of sour. Medium body, sticky texture, average carbonation. Finish is dry and smokey, with a developing feel of chocolate rum cake? Not a style I usually choose, but this one I enjoyed.

500 mml bottle tasted on the 27/09/2016. Dark ruby colour with a low white head. Aroma is dominated by smoked malts, brown sugar and bacon. Taste is bacon, dark malts, smoked ham. Dry finish and oily texture. Next one please!

Originally rated on 12/11/08. I bought this one for its style, i checked the reviews first so i knew it was going to be decent, but i dont care much for smoked beer, so i wasnt expecting much, but to my surprise this was pretty good. Despite a vigorous pour there wasnt much head and very little lace. Dark brown body, amber when held up to light. Aroma was great, smoke (of course) but it was just right not too much or too little, also with some malt tones. Flavor was similar with a great smoke balance, reminicent of bacon, with malts in the back ground. It is an unusual style but this stuff was pretty good, and i wish i had another.

Shared 16.9 oz. bottle brought into Lunar Brewing Co. by the distributor rep, and poured to snifters showing a ruby highlighted, dark brown color, with a presentable layer of tan foam that reduced to a persistent ring, and dots & dashes of lacing. The nose was a distinct, but mellow dose of smoke & sausage, with some toasted malt, and a touch of sweetness. Medium bodied, with decent carbonation, the taste was similar notes, showcasing the German malts, and continued smoke that comingled with moderate, earthy bitterness, and dryness. A tasty blend of two favorite styles.

I have to recognize that this kind of beer is not my favourite. I drank it in Nürnberg with friends, in the old city, close to the castle. The body is brown and, thin foam, average carbonation. When you drank it the taste is really smocked like some trees that you burn or a kind of smocked sausage but the taste is really strong, hiding the malt and the hop.

This beer will always divide opinion due to its unique taste. Aroma of smoked meat that dominates the beer. If you can’t deal with that, you’ll back away quickly. If you can persist, you may find it grows on you, especially if you let it warm up a little. Thumbs up from me because it’s just so weird it’s good.

Piwo o miedzianej barwie, przechodzącej wręcz w czerwoną. Klarowne.

Bottle from Spec’s. Very dark brown with ruby highlights and a tiny, fast retreating beige head. Aroma of smoke, charred wood, caramel and beef jerky. Taste is smoky and very slightly sweet. Dry with very soft carbonation; almost flat.
