UPDATED: JAN 13, 2012 Dark brown color, short head. Aroma of smoked bacon, salami, tar. Lingering salami palate. This one is definitely stronger than the Marzen-version. Taste is more smoked, not as easy drinkable as the Marzen.

UPDATED: APR 22, 2008 When i first tried this one in Bamberg i must say i really disliked the strong smoked flavour and aroma. However, like a few others beer-styles (for me e.g. lambics and flemish sour ales) it’s all just a matter of getting used to the extreme. Last night i tried this one again and MAN did i like it! The strong smoked aroma is just one of the best i’ve ever experienced, the flavour is marvellously cpmplex and the mouthfeel is outstanding: very full and thick. This is fantastic stuff, once you’ve gotten used to the extreme smokiness.

Tons of smoke. The bacon of beer. I felt this example of the style was a bit over the top.

One of the smokeyest beers I've ever had! There is enough malt there to make it interesting. The wood also comes through somewhat. Great brew!

UPDATED: NOV 14, 2005 Hang gliding over flamboyantly rich smoked gouda lakes, earthy grilled fumes reach your dripping saliva...I could just sail over this ubiquitous fragrance for hours...The voracious appetite which is created fuels the dive and welcomes the sweet dryness of a sticky, muddy roast...Light vinous mirth ensues, as balanced and quaffable flambéd characters reign...A centripetal force of bountiful rejoicing...

My first smoked beer. I wasn't sure what to expect, other than a smokey aroma and smokey flavor. That is exactly what this delivers. Aroma is of campfire smoke, light malt towards the end. Beautiful ruby colored with a grand head. Flavor is just as smokey & malty as the aroma. I realize that this was my first smoked beer and I really have nothing to compare it to, but this beer just came as a huge shock to my system, and I couldn't shake the feeling that I was drinking something that fell into the ashes of a campfire. I recognize the complexity and uniqueness of this beer, but it (or perhaps the style) is just not for me.

Huge smokey aroma (duh!) The color was a pretty dark ruby color with a large tan head. The flavor was very smokey...bacon came to mind...definitely smoked ham of some kind. The aftertaste was more malty...sweet. This gave a pleasant finish to the beer.

This was an excellent smoked beer with a velvety smooth taste and wonderful appeal. The smokey flavor was evident but not over abundant. Fluffy beigh head with small frothy bubbles covers this dark brownish bock beer. Rich and creamy flavor with a malty undertone. Not overly sweet. Excellent palate with a great finish. I really loved this beer. Thanks to CaptainCougar!

UPDATED: MAR 6, 2005 Bottle. Dark mahogany. Small foamy tan head. Dark malts, smoked meat, burnt wood, smoldering earth, and some sweet notes(like burnt barbecue sauce-due to the sugars). Taste is sweet malts, roasty notes, dark smoke, burning wood, smoked sausage, and light spices. Body is thicker and smoother than the Maerzen. Medium carbonation. Lingering smokiness. Finish is big smokiness, creamy, sweet malts, light spice, and smoked meats. hint of smoked gouda as well. Nice!

I´d rather eat a smoked salmon or a really smoked sausage or salami. This is more like sitting in house on fire, drinking. a pity for such a beautiful appearence. I wonder why this beer style hasn´t been spread allover the world?
