| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Oct 1, 2008 Pours a dark but translucent crimson-violet color. A dense, frothy, khaki colored head settles slowly to a wispy film, splotchy rings of lace circling the glass. The aroma is just as I suspected it would be, massively smoky, with deeply roasted caramel, bittersweet chocolate, and a strong hint of salty, smoked pork butt. It smells very elemental and earthy, basic yet formidable in its assertiveness. Flavors continue down the smoke trail, big, scorched caramel and chocolate malts showing along with more salty park notes and hints of earthy, peppery hops. The body is substantial and creamy, with balanced carbonation. As smoked beers go, this one it top notch. Great beer. DrDavid (957), Johnson, Vermont, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Sep 28, 2008 (Bottle). Smoked meat aroma, and some maltiness. Root beer color with almost no head. Flavor a mixture of smokiness and malt. Complex and intense, but not as pleasurable as the Maerzen. juiceisloose (667), Windermere, Florida, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Sep 20, 2008 Pours a dark amberish brown color with a medium, foamy cream colored head. That head slowly settles to a thin film. The aroma is of campfire smoke, smoked bacon and sausage, and some burnt carame; malts. Pretty smokey smell, but it is not too overpowering. The flavor follows with the smoked malts and smoked meat taste, but there is a good amount of caramel malt sweetness that seems to mellow out the smoke. Medium bodied and smooth with just the right amount of carbonation. This one is easy drinking for a smoked with a nice little sweet flavor to smooth things out. Really nice smoked brew. Aroma was strong of roasted, smoked malts. The flavor was very similar to a dunkel, but with a strong smoked aftertaste. The finish is what did not sit well with me, but it was still a pretty good beer. vikingguy (144), Chaska, Minnesota, USA
| 2.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 10/20 | Sep 6, 2008 Wow...another beer that my wife got me as a gift. Quite an experience...tastes like your drinking liquid beef jerky. The aroma hits you as soon as you pop the top...SMOKE. The flavor is definitely smokey as well which I wasn’t particulary fond of, however the malty texture and notes of raisins and dates balanced it out nicely. It has a medium body...drinkable but the smoke is overpowering and one is enough for me. ckau (26), north east, Maryland, USA

The beer is smooth, clear witha dark amber hue. Head was big and fluffy but reduced quickly. For my first rauchbier this beer makes you think during every sip. Good example of the style. carruthm (1122), Seattle, Washington, USA

A - Similar aroma to that of the marzen, with a highly smoky, sausage aroma.
T - smooth, creamy, malty with smoke aspects.
P - Pretty smooth. lb4lb (2011), Austin, Texas, USA

Pours dark brownish, clear with a tan head. Smell is smoky, juicy meat. Taste is surprisingly hoppy for a smoked beer with balanced malt and a slightly overpowering smokiness. Pretty smoky, but not too, too much. Thin mouthfeel that detracts. Too watery. Not bad, but I liked the Marzen quite a bit better.
