The aroma is distinctly smoky with campfire and bacon, and just a touch of malty sweetness behind it. The flavor has a rich, meaty flavor from all that smoke and some lightly burnt wood tones. There’s also some very subtle grassy hops and graininess in there.

This one pours a clear chestnut body with a small beige head. Aroma of bbq pork rinds. Palate is exceptional, as the smoked malt combines with the carbonation for an exquisite and feel. A nice malty bock hides underneath the smoke flavors, adding some notes of dark fruits, molasses, and spicy hops. Lovely! austone (1036), Turku; Pori, Finland

Smoke isn’t so overwhelming in the flavor, but certainly there among tar, roasted malts, liquorice and nice bittering hops. Full bodied and smooth mouthfeel. Unfortunately the smoke gets somewhat tamed if aged, so this one is perfect when it’s fresh. Can’t even imagine what it’s like in Bamberg!
edit: Had to raise this up a notch, definitely one of my favourite beers year around. Where do you find such balance? jmw141 (134), Canton, Illinois, USA

Pours a wonderful ruby-red color with streaks of orange shining through. Light brown bubbly head that dissipates after a couple drinks. Smells very smoky, just like something is cooking over a fire. Smoky malt up front and bitterness in the back. It tastes like smoke the whole way through. Whoo What a dry finish. My tongue is like sandpaper after one drink. This is quite an intriguing beer, but Im not sure if I’m a fan. I guess if you want your beer to taste like smoke then a rauchbier is for you, but its definitely not for me. BeerIsMyGod (12), USA
| 4.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 5/5 | 10/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Jun 27, 2008 Easily one of the tastiest beers my mouth has ever come in contact with. This beverage further proves that beer is possibly the great drink on earth. The aroma is extremely smoky, like a grilled porterhouse steak. The taste is similarly fantastic. Nice hints of mesquite and a slight sweetness. Highly recommended for everyone looking for something absolutely mind-bending. mjs (1463), Helsinki, Finland

Bid slightly tan head that did not last quite long. Smoke and tar in nose. Full oily palate with light carbonation. Lots of smoke in taste. Some salty liquorice. Hints of dried plum. Slightly sweet. Hops. Bitter aftertaste. paytoplay (123), , California, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jun 25, 2008 Thin whisp of a head, nut brown ale color. Dark rich flavors help to balance out the smoke. Goes great with roasted or cured meats and nuts. At first you think the smoke is going to be overwhelming but it always seems to be in the background adding to the complexity of the beer. Very well made and very consistant. Something I would think in this style of beer to be very difficult. Though widely available locally a rare beer. Would like to see this in a cork enclosed 750ml for aging.
