This beer pours with a dark greyish brown color, an off white head, and a strong aroma of smoked ham. The flavor is meaty, thick with a strong bitterness and levels out to a slight sweet smokiness but retains the bitternes through the finish. A sharp initial bite on the palate evens to a smooth creaminess. Pretty good. Mungo (2474), Southampton, Hampshire, England
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Feb 21, 2007 Draught @ Battersea Beer Festival. Smoky aroma with lagery malt component. Fairly sweet but with balancing phenolic hops and a nice dose of earthy hops. Really tasty and drinkable given the strength. islay (474), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 3/5 | 18/20 | Feb 20, 2007 16.9 oz. bottle. The amazing and powerful aroma features smoked ham, fresh pretzels with honey mustard, and lemony hops. It is unusual and welcome but perhaps a tad much. The beer pours a deep, clear copper-brown with a large amount of thick, uneven cream-colored head and extensive lacing. It looks even better than it smells. All of the smoky elements of the aroma are prominent in the flavor. In addition, the flavor features a very nice sweet roasted malt taste. This would be a very tasty beer even without the smoke, but with the smoke it is a uniquely delicious treat. ASRU is medium in body and a little undercarbonated. Not surprisingly, it produces a smoky and malty aftertaste. This is one of the most exceptional, flavorful, impressive, and memorable beers that I have ever had the pleasure of tasting. | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Feb 14, 2007 Aroma of ham on the grill from very dark brown body. Full and creamy palate stood out. Good malt and smoke flavor. Nice balance as the smoke portion doesn’t completely overwhelm as it tends to in most smoked brews. Very good smoked beer.
