DCJack (146), Alabama, USA Aug 11, 2006 really excellent in a way that I have never experienced in another beer.
truly exceptional
Some of the "smoked" beers I’ve tried reminded me of licking ashtrays. I’ve licked enough ashtrays in my life and I’m trying to put that part of my past behind me.
But this beer is like tongue kissing Nicole Kidman after she’s smoked a joint.
Nobody can possibly beat that metaphor.
I rest my case.
stegosaurus (1882), Levittown, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 8, 2006 Bottle sampled with Beerded one. Pours bronze with a decent sized off-white head. Aroma of smoke and smoked meats. The flavor is smoky, carbonated, smooth, and unique. Great brew. Ibrew2or3 (2714), Safety Harbor, Florida, USA Aug 1, 2006 Clear amber color with tan head. Solid charred wood smoke aroma. Explosive even. First sip has the sweet malts hit with a hint of hops. Then that flavor is over-run by the rich eye searing soupy smog smokiness. I think I’ve gotten used to these Schlenkerla smoke beers. Seems tamer than the Marzen. Excellent smoke beer. If you really really want a smoke beer then look no farther than this Urbock or the Marzen. You will not be disappointed rudolf (1734), Buffalo, New York, USA Jul 31, 2006 Deep copper, thin off white head. Nose is campfire, malt comes through more than their other beers. Flavor is rich bock, malt, caramel, smoke, dark fruits. Smoke is understated for the brewery. Nice! thedm (3833), Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA Jun 29, 2006 This bottled brew from Traverse City, MI poured a small sized head of mostly diminishing foamy large sized tan colored bubbles that left behind a very dark caramel red brown colored body that was transparent only around the edges. The aroma was heavy with smoky malty notes. The mouth feel initially mediumly tingly from start to finish. The flavor was smoky and malty with an overpowering smoky aspect. wxman (582), O’Fallon, Illinois, USA Jun 28, 2006 Dark reddish brown pour with a decent off white head which coats the glass somewhat. Aroma of burning hickory and spice. Thich rich flavor of molasses, butter, maple and smoke. Very satisfying and well balanced for it’s complexity. OldGrowth (1407), North Carolina, USA Jun 27, 2006 Bottle, from Julio’s. Great nose, smoke. More the way a thick piece of wood smell after a fire than smoke diectly from a fire does. Little charcoal too. Clean orangy brown color, small head with ok lacing. Bitter smokey flavor, like aroma. Some molasses/caramel once you get past the smoke. Medium body, lite creamy mouthfeel, smokey bitter finish. Well now, that sure lives up to the name, A smoked beer. Don’t think I’d sit around having one after another, but it was very enjoyable. I was inspired to buy this after watching Thirsty Traveler visit brewery. BeerandBlues2 (3201), Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA Jun 25, 2006 1 pint, 0.9 oz bottle from tjthresh. Pours a hazy dark brown molasses with a patchy tan head, edgy, lined lacing. Aroma is smoky bacon and ash, dark roasted grain malt, toast, oak and a hint of charred fruit. Heavy bacon flavor, moderate ash and charred wood (oak), mild sweetness, burnt fruit, toasted and charred grain. Medium bodied and fizzy, spicy palate with lively carbonation.
