sloth (1658), Ceciltucky, Co., Maryland, USA Jun 17, 2006 Poured a small tan head that was short lived, a little spotty lacing left behind. Clear, brown/light mahogany color. Smokey nose, smoked meats are dominant. Body is medium, creamy on the palate, almost oily. Smoke is the name of the game here and thiers plenty of it! Notes of roast, charcoal and some lightly sweet malts are buried in there also. Lightly sweet, smokey finish. Ummmm, WOW. STEPHENDR (478), California, USA Jun 14, 2006 Transparent dark brown appearance- nose/taste thick hickory smoke pit with cheese kind of presence- unusual yet wonderful beer IrishBoy (2686), Bakersfield, California, USA Jun 13, 2006 Smoky nose like that which emminates from Top quality smoked salmon without the fish notes; walnut brown body and and small tan head; smoky malted flavor, but I can detect a bit of hopswith the sips before the smokiness dominates. SDbruboy (1832), San Diego, California, USA Jun 11, 2006 500 ml bottle, from Holiday Wine Cellar in Escondido. Pours medium-dark brown with a ruddy cast when held to light, and a small rather quickly diminishing beige head. Aroma is smokey (no surprise), woody and somewhat salty and sweet like teriyaki beef jerky, not much I can identify beyond that. Flavor is sweet and savory, dominated of course by the smoked malts, burnt molasses, but with light herbal, earthy and floral as well, again, rather reminiscent of the aftertaste of a nice piece of jerky. Smooth medium to full body and moderate carbonation. Yummy, love these rauchbiers! ElGaucho (1730), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Jun 11, 2006 Bottle. I could smell the smoke after I poured it but before I brought it too my nose. Very strong smoke aspect, and a bit of a stone smoke at that. The aroma reminds me of Altenmünster Rauchenfelser Steinbier, which is not a good thing, because that was easily my lowest rated Smoke beer. Clear dark brown color, that is nearly opaque. Tan head. Some lace. Initial moutfeel is that of body. The smoke characteristic is stronger in the nose than it is on the palate. Finish is smooth and pleasant. Very drinkable and enjoyable. A little too soft in the finish and in the carbonation. Perhaps it had been sitting on the shelf for awhile. There are some hops here as well. I’d love to try this fresh on tap. A good brew. beervana (781), Libertyville, Illinois, USA Jun 9, 2006 (04.27.06) One pint, 9oz brown bottle from DiCarlo’s, Mundelein, IL. 6.5% ABV. Poured clear brown black with small off-white head. Soft carbonation. Smoke, peat, and cedar wood in the nose. Medium bodied ale that starts with light malt sweetness and mouth blasting peat and smoke. Finished dry with more smoke flavor. The beer tasted like it was steeped in burnt wood and peat. Not for the meek; Definitely an acquired taste. A treat for folks who enjoy strong tasting beers. eaglefan538 (2355), Wilmington, Delaware, USA Jun 5, 2006 Pesonally, I’d take the Marzen Rauch over this one, but this was pretty good too. Aroma was, surprise, smokey. Flavor was, surprise, smokey (with a bitter finish). Pour was dark brown-reddish with a nice initial head that turned into nothing before long. Mouthfeel was thinner than I was expecting. hophead75 (1945), Boonton, New Jersey, USA Jun 4, 2006 Dark amber. Aroma: Big and of smoke, and more smoke- almost like smelling smoked sausages. Taste is smoky, balanced with a good amount of malt. Smooth finish with some hops. I can see how this beer is good for its style, maybe a bit over the top for me personally.
