4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottled - Nice and sweet smoked aromas with some dried fuit notes. Light brown colour with a thin, but long lasting beige head. Sweet malty, bready tastes with a smoky twist without being too agressive. Some caramel, dried plums, and gently smoked ham tastes can be found. Full body, low carbonation, nice smoky finish. A well balanced smoked beer.

Bottle, 500ml. Clear ruby with a frothy brown head. Musky, smoked aroma. Medium to robust bodied with moderate carbonation. Sweet and malty with a deep smoked character. Smoked herbal bitter finish. Very nice.

This is very, very delicious. Dark brown with half inch of white bubbles. And wood smoke. Some rauchbiers are "smoky", this one is "campfire". Big and bold. Takes no prisoners. Yum.

I lived in Bamberg many years ago, courtesy of Uncle Sam, and occasionally went to the ancient gasthaus where this beer is still served. Were the walls painted with bulls blood? Could be. Anywho, I was not particularly enamored of the rauchbier in those days and never had their Urbock until just now. This is a very palatable beer, with the meaty smokiness of rauchbier toned down by the darker malt. Poured into a squat tulip, smells smoky alright, looks dark reddish brown with a negligible head that does not persist. Good balance of flavors and not offensive at all to this aged vegetarian.

Draught. Pours dark amber, solid white head. Aroma of campfire, ham, sausages with caramely and malty backbone. Very chewy aroma. In taste similar, very solid smokiness, medium to high sweetness finished with solid biterness. Medium to full body. Classic beer, still great.

The first smoked beer I've ever had the pleasure of tasting. Other's can write the notes, a great treat to find on tap at the Three Boars Eatery in Edmonton AB.

Nice brew. Not as smoky as other Schlenkerla brews. Pours a light copper colour with a thin off white head. The nose is smoky, campfire-esque with a light toasted malt, a bit spicy. Not too smoky but a nicely balanced malt and smoke.

From a bottle. Wow -- amazing smoked beer with rich mahogany color, some lacing of a thin white head. Smoky without being overly burnt or roasted. Sweet, smooth malty goodness. The epitome of a smoked beer.

(First tapping every first Thursday of October) A smoked bock beer for Bamberg’s strong beer season (October through December). Matured for months in ancient rock-cellars underneath Bamberg and tapped freshly from the oakwood cask. Similar to, but much bigger than the classic Maerzen style.
