(First tapping every first Thursday of October) A smoked bock beer for Bamberg’s strong beer season (October through December). Matured for months in ancient rock-cellars underneath Bamberg and tapped freshly from the oakwood cask. Similar to, but much bigger than the classic Maerzen style.

Bottle - Rich dark malts, dark fruit and nice balanced smoke. Jet black with a creamy light brown head. Heavy dark malts, well balanced smoke and a nice thick mouthfeel. These guys can do no wrong in my book.

UPDATED: DEC 31, 2013 Butelka 0.5L. Brunatne klarowne z rubinowymi refleksami. Bardzo obfita, jasnobeżowa, zwarta, drobnopęcherzykowa piana. Aromat to przede wszystkim intensywna wędzonka, szynka, oscypek. Przebija się nuta chlebowa i toffee - ogólnie poza wędzonością aromat słodki. W smaku również na pierwszym miejscu wysoka wędzoność, kiełbasa z ogniska, wędzona ryba. Duża podbudowa słodowa, piwo gęste o oleistej fakturze. Wysycenie niskie do średniego. Bardzo dobre, mocno wędzone piwo od Schlenkerli - jak zwykle. To piwo sprawia wrażenie, że można nim najeść się. Jest to spowodowane zarówno aromatami i smakami kojarzącymi się z wędzonym jedzeniem, jak i przez pełnię, gęstość i fakturę piwa.

Bottle 50 cc, thank you Jeppe. Nice gesture and much apriciated. And here’s for something different. Lovely smoked meat smell. Reminds me off the Dutch Hema rookworst (a smoked sausage). Pours a dark redbrown with a small off-white/light brown head. Taste is a robust sweet smoky with just a hint of bitterness in the finish. Just a little carbonation.

Oh glorious beer! Blessed by the smoke that was a given - will it be enough to get me past my dislike for bocks? Thick sweet smoke reminiscent of a smoker filled with meat, zero wood hints, pan roasted carrots and yams hides. Great aroma that lacks complexity. Tasty smoke that cannot hide enough bock to make me love this. Odd roasted bitter over sweetness that I will never like (but like it here more than usual), I don’t mind the harsh quality - still a really smooth soothing brew. A bolder brew than than the marzen but I’d much rather put back a couple of litres of that instead.

Bottle. Dark brown with a medium sized diminishing beige head. Meaty salami smoke, light chalk, bark, wood, rye bread. Medium body, soft creamy texture, soft carbonation. Medium malty sweetness, light bitterness. Lingering smoke. Very soft and pleasant.

Bottle. Pours clear dark brown with a small to medium off white head. Aroma has lots of smoke, mostly like smoked fish I guess with some bacon as well. Taste also has bacon and smoked fish with some malts. Medium body and carbo. Nice stuff.

Bottle 0.5l from P&M Bonn. Pours mahagony with off white head. Taste is smoked ham, roasted malt, burnt wood. Intense. Taste is light bitter, medium sweet, smoked ham, roasted malt, wood. Long lasting smokey aftertaste. Oily, full bodied beer. Perfect smoked beer.

500ml brown bottle. A deep red brown pour, creamy beige cap. Nose has smoky ham/meat. Taste has smoky and ham/meaty notes. Light bitterness at the end, then fairly dry. Medium bodied with prickly carbonation. Overall a smooth smoked bock, very pleased to have finally tried the Urbock after years of admiring the Marzen.

Sorry beer peeps, I just don’t get the smoke beer-thing. Looked nice, a dark brown with a small head. Aroma was a sweet and potent smokiness. I gave it the benefit of the doubt as I really like smoked meats in general. Unfortunately, the smoke flavor was just too much for me. I definitely don’t want it as part of my beer. I get that a lot of people might enjoy these, not me. Looked like a decent beer, mouthfeel was pleasant but that overpowering smokiness was just a killer.
