(First tapping every first Thursday of October) A smoked bock beer for Bamberg’s strong beer season (October through December). Matured for months in ancient rock-cellars underneath Bamberg and tapped freshly from the oakwood cask. Similar to, but much bigger than the classic Maerzen style.

Poured out of a bottle Big smoke filled nose Small off white head that lingers leaving lacing on the glass Moderate to high carbonation Dark brown with ruby tints Taste is smokey malt sweetness that is smooth on the finish with just enough smoke that lingers in the after taste ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Clear brick red with a massive head. Good carbonation. Aroma is bacon and wood smoke. Followed by a surprisingly crisp, light malt. It’s biscuity and bready after a heavy dose of campfire. Agitating it lets the sweetness really break out. The aroma has the same familiar elements: first the smoke, then a sweet, lagery malt, and then more smoke on the back of the tongue. Just great. The feel is smooth but not slick, substantial but not thick, dry but not ashy. I would say drink about half a bottle, or have it as a shot with my bacon and eggs.

.5L bottle into wrong glassware because you’re not doing the dishes. Nose is, "ew, this smells like a fire" per my wife. I understand how the finish may be a turn off, but over all this is pretty darn good. It’s as though a lager is screaming in desperation to get help behind locked doors. Drink only if you like smoke.

Ins Glas ergießt sich ein dunkel rötlichbraunes Bier mit schöner Schaumkrone. Geruch intensiv rauchig, Schinken, leicht röstmalzig. Geschmack rauchig, würzig, geräucherter Schinken, klasse!

50cl bottle @home. Pours dark brown with an off-white, creamy head. Overwhelming smoked aroma, bit like bacon. Taste is bacon, caramel, bit sweet, smoked but not as dominating as the aroma would suspect. Actually an interesting beer, not bad at all.

500cl bottle poured into a Delirium Tremens glass. Pours an almost black liquid with a foamy off white head. Taste is malt and sweetness. The smoke is not too evident to start but once swallowed there is little else coming through other than smoke. Very much an acquired taste but one that I haven’t got. Very good for its style but just a little too heavy going but glad I tried it.

Aroma and flavours of good quality English bacon and a dram of Laphroaig. Poor appearance, with not much of a decent head. I thought the Maerzen one was a bit thicker on the palate. Still, a great beer.

500ml bottle from Berlin Bier Shop. Probably the smokiest Schlenkerla with the biggest flavours, but even so it’s blended so well with such a smooth mouthfeel that it’s so easily drinkable. Smoky bacon dominates with a meaty juiciness, moderate bitterness and some ash and charcoal wafting about. Tastes like a meal in a glass. Great stuff!

Bottle. Creamy off-white good mostly lasting head. Dark red amber colour. Moderate malty and hoppy smoked aroma. Moderate bitter flavor. Some bacon notes. Average moderate bitter finish. OK balanced smoked. Oily palate.

Flasche von Grabsch, Berlin-Lichterfelde. - Tiefstes Kastanienbraun.
