COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
(First tapping every first Thursday of October) A smoked bock beer for Bamberg’s strong beer season (October through December). Matured for months in ancient rock-cellars underneath Bamberg and tapped freshly from the oakwood cask. Similar to, but much bigger than the classic Maerzen style.

Obviously rauch especially in the aroma. Had it iota clay mug and it looked good! Sweet like a bock, not as fresh as the märzen

500ml bottle poured in a dimpled pint mug. A: Pours a deep dark amber to brown color forming a medium beige head. Medium to low retention and lots of lacings left S: Very particular. Very smoky as expected. Bacon. Roasted malts, honey, brown sugar T: As the nose, very roasted and smoky. Bacon, honey, roasted malts, smoked wood. Sweet candy/brown sugar upfront. Sweeter than the Marzen version. End is roasted bitterness M: Medium and molasses body. Medium carbonation. Roasted bitter aftertaste O: Excellent beer, excellent drinkability. The best Rauchbier ever! :) [ BA Review @ 4/21/2012 ]

Bottle from Muckey’s. Poured into a tall lager glass. A very good looking dark ruby brown with a thick tan head. Aroma is very smoky with layers of malt too.. Flavor is smooth and malty with layers of smoke. Good balance. Lingering dark sweetness.

On tap at their brewpub in Bamberg. The beer pours out in a deep black colour with steady head and medium body. Aroma of campfire and woods. Taste of campfire, woods, smoked ham, smoke, peat and torf. Earthy finish. Drinkable.

Dark brown color. Aroma is, well, smoke...duh...a wood smokiness. Taste is strong smoke at first, but after a few sips the smoke becomes less in your face. Sweet, malty, thin-to-medium mouthfeel. Very enjoyable beer, though not the kind I want to drink often.

"thanks John - this was an exquisite beer. the smoke is anything but subtle, more aggressive than i was expecting, but not overpowering. rich malty tones and a super smooth finish. love it!"

Enjoyed fresh on tap@source, 12/2013, bottled 2014 and aged (1yr, bb10/2014). Gorgeous ruby-edged jet black with thick, pillowy beige crown. Delicately sweet and peated aroma of vaporised, smoke-charred BBQ ribs on a fir bonfire: the perfume version. On draught the nose is rich, dense, dry yet caramalty, bottled some oak shines through, whereas aged it is all oak, branches, earth. Taste draught: harmoniously rich and creamy, a meaty, caramelised marshmellow. Bottled slightly slimmer in body, with more tannins and twig-like wood components shining through over a bockish sugarbelly. Stellar when fresh and on tap in season, impressive and still sessionable bottled.

Aroma of beef jerky, bacon, roasted cereal grains. Appears clear reddish dark brown, minimal pale caramel foam. Tastes of roasted malted barley, some caramel, sweet and mostly bitter. Overall, great aroma, good.

Bottle. Dark black purple. Thin. Strong woodsmoke/bonfire nose. Tastes of smoke blended with a sweet malt character--almost sugary.
