Pours dark brownish, clear with a tan head. Smell is smoky, juicy meat. Taste is surprisingly hoppy for a smoked beer with balanced malt and a slightly overpowering smokiness. Pretty smoky, but not too, too much. Thin mouthfeel that detracts. Too watery. Not bad, but I liked the Marzen quite a bit better. mjg74 (2001), La Mesa, California, USA

Strong smokey bbq aroma. Some chocolate in there as well. Thick rich roasted maltiness. Bitter coffee and lots of smoke. Some sweetness as well. Finish is quite bitter. beerbill (1989), Laurel, New York, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Nov 29, 2007 16.9 oz. bottle. Pours a clear dark brown with a little bit of red when held to the light. Moderate beige colored head that lasted through most of the glass and and left light lacing. Strong smokey aroma. The flavor was again dominated by strong smoke, but with notes of malt and just a little brown sugar sweetness. Moderate bitterness at the finish which lingers after the swallow. Really good stuff, especially on a cold winter’s night! travita (1970), Frisco, Texas, USA

The smell is awesome with smoke, bbq, bacon, meat, malts, and goodness. The taste is about the same but does wane slightly from the smell. altonbrownd (1968), Amsterdam, Netherlands
| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Nov 30, 2007 Draft at Wildeman. Dark brown colour. Very strong nose and taste of smoked ham. It felt like it was full of nicotine, charcoal and sweet ham. It isn’t really my thing but can see that some would really enjoy it. Perhaps worth trying again after reading all the comments here. | 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 11/20 | Jan 28, 2007 dark pour w/ light red hints in it and a huge fluffy almost soapy light tan head w/ some sticky lacing. A lightly sour aroma w/ hints of lactose and a very big smoky burnt wood aroma, a bit over the top on smoke for me. Palate is full well coated and lightly creamy. Flavor is overly smoked for me definate burnt wood some light chocolates hints of tobacco. I don’t like it. hophead75 (1964), Boonton, New Jersey, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jun 4, 2006 Dark amber. Aroma: Big and of smoke, and more smoke- almost like smelling smoked sausages. Taste is smoky, balanced with a good amount of malt. Smooth finish with some hops. I can see how this beer is good for its style, maybe a bit over the top for me personally.
