4.7 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottled the day before. The typycal Schlenkerla aroma to smoke and bacon. Excellent retention, head and lace. In mouth, wood, smoked meat and a little trace of sweetness of a plum kind. Delicious, as usual.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle at Bierstube in Philly. Clear dark chestnut pour with a weak off-white head. Bottle is likely towards a year old. Dark woody caramel malts. Good amount of smoke in the mix. Both well burnt and strangely juicy. Coffee, cocoa and roasted nuts. Dark rye bread. This bottle started out way too cold and took a lot of warming to bring out the deeper flavors. Ends up being richly complex. Ultimately (to me) feels like a milder version of the Mikkeler Weasel which (again to me) is one of the greatest dark beers in existence!

4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
Pours a lovely dark amber with a distinct dark ruby cast that is slightly darker than their Marzen variant . Good head, lacing and retention. Outstanding nose of meaty bacon like smoke against an underlying dark fruit (plum, fig) note over a slightly sweet base. Medium body with a creamy slick texture. Normal carbonation with a bit of effervescence on the finish. Compared to their Marzen variant, Urbock has slightly less head characteristics, slightly more carbonation and more body and texture. The superb flavor profile is even more outstanding in that it obtains a higher degree of balance by being slightly sweeter and coats the tongue with a slick layer of bacon like smoke. The flavor profile is a masterpiece of intensity, balance and complexity. The delicious smoke character is always present, but never overpowering. It begins with a campfire bacon like smoke over a moderately sweet background that has dark fruit characteristics. The middle allows the hops to impart a low level bitterness that has a citric note as it effervesces. The finish is less dry than the Marzen, somewhat crisp, slightly sweet and leaves you with a touch of dark fruit and a lingering smokiness as if you’ve sitting around a campfire. World Class and ever so slightly better than the Marzen variant.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours amber/brownish with a thick beige head. Aroma is very smoky. Bacon, caramel, honey, sugar... Particular smell. Reminds me of the better breakfasts. Gets me hungry. Taste is much in line with the aroma. Strong smoky taste, bit like the smoked sausages or the ’paling’ we have here in The Netherlands. However, the smoke indeed gets less in your face after a while, which creates room for the other flavors that this beer encompasses... Clear taste of the caramel as well, sugars, some dark chocolate, bit of wood, some fruits as well... Bit bitterish in the end. Astonishingly good actually. Really tasty. I like this. Smooth mouthfeel, creamy, soft carbonation... Didn’t know what to expect after hearing about this smoked beer. But I’m glad that I haven given it a shot. Wonderful rich beer. Meaty, sweetish, full beer, that would do fine with some nice pork chops. Great, great, great brew.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
500 ml bottle. Lovely ruby red color topped by a thick rocky beige head with clinging lace. Wonderful smoky malt aroma reminiscent of a woodsy campfire. Upfront their are notes of bittersweet chocolate, charred wood and burnt raisins. Mid taste brings dark sweet caramel and smoked malt. This is a complex brew that drinks smoothly. Bitter hoppy finish complements the smokiness nicely. Wow, this is a classic and certainly the best smoked beer I have ever had. A must have.

Think lagers are boring? Try this one. Aecht specializes in smoked beers. This Urbock has a nice creamy white head with some lacing. Color is very dark ruby/brown. The aroma is one of smoked bacon, some maple, caramel. The taste is smoked malts, very little hop profile is very slight, but present. This is Urbock and has some of those tastes to it, caramel, little toffee, but the smoked flavor just amps it up about 3 notches.Drinking this makes me feel like I am Germany. I could drink a ton of this stuff. Experience it, even if you don’t like Oktoberfest beers.

Smells of wood smoke and banana and light tobacco. Pours a dark translucent Brown with fine tan head. Tastes of smoke, molasses, savory licorice, banana, and more smoke. All this with a short sharp bitter finish. Surprisingly syrupy in the mouth feels rich and smooth. Really delicious.
