COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
(First tapping every first Thursday of October) A smoked bock beer for Bamberg’s strong beer season (October through December). Matured for months in ancient rock-cellars underneath Bamberg and tapped freshly from the oakwood cask. Similar to, but much bigger than the classic Maerzen style.

Bottle sample at a tasting at Beer Market Jaffa. Thanks Vova. Very dark brown and a little clear. nutty, fully hickory smoke aroma, smooth, smoky, sweetish taste. Smooth, hardly any carbonation, full body and hints of bitterness in the finish.

Apparently the winter version in this fascinating series, again with the Bamberg smoked malt. Pale beige, creamy, sticky foam, colour an opaque brown with a copper hue, only visible under bright light; nose gets the same wave of smoked meat and charcoal as in the better-known Märzen version, but this time it gets more, as hints of bitter chocolate, liquorice and caramel shine through. The taste is even more surprising, as the caramel- and chocolate-like malty sweetishness dominates the first sip, only to be abruptly broken by the salty, bone-dry smokiness which lingers on till deep in the finish, which also reveals some spicy hops. Actually quite complex, especially for a lager, and in that respect perhaps even more rewarding than the classic Märzen version.

500mL bottle, pours a dark amber brown with a small beige head. Nose is malty and smoky, with lots of dry caramel malt, lots of smoke but no ashtray. Flavour is exactly the same, with everything acting in total harmony. One of the most complex smoked beers I’ve had. Excellent.

Poured from a 500 mL bottle. Clear dark brown with persistent toffee head. Good lacing. Aroma is smoked barbecue jerky and dark malts. Flavour is smoked hickory and burnt malts. Interesting smoked beer.

Bottle (500 ml). Dark brown with reddish reflects, medium beige head and good lacing. Aroma is quite smokey but as always with Schlenkerla it’s deep and well intagrated. In this one, it’s similar to Gouda cheese. There’s also caramel, malt sweetness and dark fruits notes. Taste is also of smoke but it leaves enough place for the malt, caramel and dark fruits to express. Light wooden notes too. Medium body. Moderate carbonation. Slightly oily mouthfeel, somewhat creamy too. Gentle medium lasting smokey aftertaste. One of the best Smoked beer I’ve tried so far. Impressive balance and drinkability. This isn’t just plain smoke, it’s quite complex and really tasty. I love Schlenkerla!

pours medium dark brown mahogany with a reviving and slightly creamy light beige head, nice lacing. rich beech-smoked and browned caramel and specialty malts, very woody and fairly tannic, red fruitiness, but also dried lightly sweetened dates, figs and prunes, caramelized nuts, some sweetness - brown sugar, few phenolic esters - much welcomed here; grassy, peppery, minerals. moderate carbonation, light to medium body - oily, bittersweet very grassy-peppery and assertively tannic woody finish. woody more than woodsy. tasty. good.

Bottle at home from backlog notes 07. Pours a clear reddish amber brown color with a medium sized beige head. The aroma and flavor have smoked meats, campfire, charred wood, just plenty of smoked character. One of my earliest smoked beer experiences and still one of the standards.

Pours a medium brown with a small offwhite head that leaves pretty lacing. Nose is of intense smoke, like at the fish smokers, over a caramel syrup background. There is also a light fruity character to it. Taste is sweet but way less than its doppel sibling, moderately bitter. Flavors of smoke once again and some sweet syrup. Finish is just smoky, completing the experience. Body is medium, carbonation more than sufficient (once again an improvement from the doppelbock to me) and lightly sticky. Pretty authentic and fun, I need to go down there some day to sample it from the cask!

Smells of pine and campfires. Color is a deep red with an off white head. Good retention. Taste is much like the smell, pine, ash, campfires. Lingers for a few moments on the palate. A good representation of the smoked style.
