Flavor has the smokiness everyone talks about, but there’s also some serious malt (caramel & chocolate) present to create balance. Ok, balance might not be the right word, but it serves as a nice complement. One note of caution: this is not a beer to be savored -- it tasted best before it warmed significantly. leaparsons (4759), Leicester, Leicestershire, England
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 11, 2002 Dark purple/red in colour. Smokiness is less potent than the Rauchbier Marzen. Malty and smokey and pretty strong in alcohol. I prefer the Marzen to urbock. sethdude (611), St. Louis, Missouri, USA

Aroma is AWESOME, tons of smoke, a little sweet, and some bacon. Flavor is the same, which I find very enjoyable. Aftertaste is very slightly dry. Very cool. | 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Jul 2, 2002 Updated: Jan 23, 2003poured like a glass of coca-cola classic, the head was diminished to mere leopard print lace, aroma was smokey but tart, sampled this directly after sampling the Rogue smoke ale, and such a sinario just exemplifies the quality of this beer, magnificent, medium to high carbination, smokiness was very enjoyable, meaty, woody, fresh, smoked-gouda finish, excellente... however I think I like the Marzen a tad better though I probably couldn't tell the two apart when it came down to it Geiserich (1790), Vienna, Austria
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jan 7, 2009 Bottled: Intensive somked aroma, notes of bacon, dark smoked meat and smoked cheese. Some sweet malt aromas. Dark brown color, small creamy, brownish head. Flavor is light sweet, malty with grain notes. Taste as you lick a charcoaled tree limb. Black smoked meat notes. Astringent, bitter and intensive smoked. Very good balanced, few alcohol remarkable. Bitter end with smoke and roasted malt. Very pleasant smoked, give me more of this stuff. joeycapps (1466), Waterdown, Ontario, Canada

Aroma reminds me of applewood smoked bacon. A big, meaty Rauchbier with a little bit of ashtray thrown in. Bold, lush, and good! Nice, big body. I prefer the flat out smoke assault of the Marzen better, but this is awesome as well. Definitely best close to room temperature.

Ruby-brown colour with a tiny head. Fantastic aroma of wood smoke and sweet, roasty malt. Flavour of smoke and bitter chocolate, with some nuttiness and a pleasing dry, bitter finish. Wonderful stuff! Thanks to Jeff for sharing this and the weizen - a nice one-two punch of smoky goodness.
