jhumphries69 (656), Tyrone, Georgia, USA Sep 23, 2006 Pours dark brown, hints of ruby, with light tan head - very clear. The aroma is full of sweet smoke - very smokey and some sweetness (almost like the crust from a smoked honey glazed ham - but with more smoke). The flavor is much maltier than expected - the sweet malts (some caramel, honey) stands up strongly to the immense smoke (which reminds me of some very heavily smoked sausages). Hints of hops in the finish. Mouthfeel is very nice and medium in body.
Allen (1036), Wölflinswil, Switzerland Jun 24, 2009 Bottled 50cl. Courtesy of joss. It pours a ruby nut brown beer with a small creamy beige head which leaves a beautiful lacework. The aroma is fantastic; exceeding my expectations which where very high. Complex, nicely smoky (very balanced and not overwhelming), with caramel, molasses, wood (beechwood and oak), bourbon, black olives, leather, black pepper and tar being most present. Hints of ginger, eucalyptus, tobacco and mint. Deeply inviting. Quite a lot of black olives in the taste which is woody, sweet, medium bodied. Low carbonation. Late bitterness. Extremely pleasant. The finish is slightly medicinal, very strong, wonderfully smoky, surprisingly dry and reminiscent of a single malt from Islay (Laphroaig 10 comes to mind) with mint, dark chocolate, paprika, tar and tarragon appearing. Absolutely fantastic! Thanks a lot joss! gringo332 (201), Richardson, Texas, USA Jun 23, 2009 Nasty aroma, but the flavor is not as intense thankfully. But I could smell it every time I sipped it so ruined it for me. bThe flavor was strong hickory smoked bacon with a light bitterness and dry maltiness and a light fruity hop presence. The finish was long, woody and smoky. Too one dimensional asedzie (437), San Francisco, California, USA Jun 19, 2009 Bottle. Pours deep brown. Aroma is of cured smoked meat, touches of summer bonfire. Flavor is thick and malty with mild wood, only a hint of smoke. Aftertaste has minor bitter and smoke notes. Excellent. A big bad beer. travita (1395), Frisco, Texas, USA Jun 16, 2009 Clear reddish brown color and a decent white head. The smell is awesome with smoke, bbq, bacon, meat, malts, and goodness. The taste is about the same but does wane slightly from the smell. joeyplush (274), Garnet Valley, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 6, 2009 dark chestnut color, tan head and excellent lacing. flavor of smoke and dark malt. Bigmmartin (276), Dayton, Ohio, USA Jun 5, 2009 I used to hate any and all smoked beers, but I’ve really grown to enjoy them. This one is dark red, a little darker than the Marzen. The flavor also has a bit more malt. Extremely smoke dominated in the aroma and flavor. Smells and tastes like a liquid campfire....but in a good way! I’m not sure which one I enjoy more though, this or the Marzen. I’ll have to try both of them again. altehkiller (71), , California, USA Jun 4, 2009 similar to the marzen version but with the maltyness of a doppelbock. lots of malts and lots of smoke flavor makes this one the better of the two. RichJ7 (1134), Cullman, Alabama, USA Jun 3, 2009 Near black pour with a thin off-white head. Aroma of smoke and maybe a little malt underneath. Flavor is very smokey malt, rich. Bittersweet throughout. Still too smokey for my tastes, but better than the marzen.
