Draught. Pours dark amber, solid white head. Aroma of campfire, ham, sausages with caramely and malty backbone. Very chewy aroma. In taste similar, very solid smokiness, medium to high sweetness finished with solid biterness. Medium to full body. Classic beer, still great.

Nice brew. Not as smoky as other Schlenkerla brews. Pours a light copper colour with a thin off white head. The nose is smoky, campfire-esque with a light toasted malt, a bit spicy. Not too smoky but a nicely balanced malt and smoke.

From a bottle. Wow -- amazing smoked beer with rich mahogany color, some lacing of a thin white head. Smoky without being overly burnt or roasted. Sweet, smooth malty goodness. The epitome of a smoked beer.

(First tapping every first Thursday of October) A smoked bock beer for Bamberg’s strong beer season (October through December). Matured for months in ancient rock-cellars underneath Bamberg and tapped freshly from the oakwood cask. Similar to, but much bigger than the classic Maerzen style.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Aroma is rich malty toasty bready with a pleasant but not overwhelming smokiness. Appearance is chocolate brown clear with small tan head that lingers. Taste is rich toasty smooth sweet malt with pleasant smokiness holding it all up and lingering in the finish. Bit of spiciness from the hops. Palate is medium+, crisp with lingering sweetness keeping the smoke balanced. Somehow manages a pleasant creaminess. Overall an excellent. beer. Without the smoke it is a fine Bock on its own. The smoke adds big depth. The most enjoyable smoked beer I have had.

500 ml bottle. Pours a clear, dark reddish brown with a medium, short lived, beige head. Sweet roasted malt aroma with a nice smoky note. Sweet roasted malt flavour with caramel, oak and a smoky, dry, bitter finish. Full body with an oily texture and soft carbonation. Nice and well balanced.

Leichte Süße, dann deutlich bitter, langer Abgang, Holz, etwas Alkohol. Die wichtigste Mahlzeit des Tages.
