3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Unfiltered tap at Bavarian Lodge’s Oktoberfest Cask & Keg fest, Oct. 1. Stouty black, stiff brown head in an 11 oz. goblet. Smell of bacon, gouda, and burnt barbecue wood. Smoked beer: you either love or you… you’re not a man. Makes you feels like you’re drinking some primordial beer found in old clay bottles in the back corner of a cave, behind the drawings of the sabre-toothed deer hunt. Don’t know what the difference is between this and the filtered, bottled version, guess just some yeast filtered out that can’t make itself felt over the big smoky malt power punch.

Black with a reddish tint, almost no head. Smoked ham, tar, chocolate, caramel. Medium sweetness, very light bitterness. Nice and strong, prefer this to the Märzen.

This one is smoked from Beech Tree wood hence the world famous taste. The Oak smoked version ( green label ) is even more smooth and an absolute wonder in the world of smoked beers.

500ml bottle. Clear, ruby red glowing, dark brown colour with average to huge, firm, frothy, fairly lasting, moderately lacing, beige head. Intense smoke aroma, notes of ham, smoked eel etc., ashes, campfire. Taste is dry, smoky, moderate subtle sweetness, wood notes, hints of tar. Excellent, as we all know.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
This one is very similar to the Marzen classic, but I prefer it because it has a more complex taste. While it is still extra smokey I can taste a bit more of the oakwood and it was a bit more smooth. A little less sticky than the Marzen. Good stuff.

Great smokey taste. Appearance is good as well as the nose. There is a good amount of smoke on the nose. Great beer overall.

Bottle. Pours a deep brown with garnet highlights and a large-grained, cream/cinnamon head. Nose is smoked meat/charcuterie, spice, brown sugar, and molasses notes; smells exactly like Klemm’s, a German smokehaus I used to frequent (and love) when I lived in Indianapolis. I miss smoked braunschweiger, with a little hot mustard...anyway. Back to the beer. And rye bread. Real rye bread, not this boring stuff you get...right. Beer. Um. Smoky, smooth, round, substantial -- it would go amazingly with a smoked braunschweiger sandwich. I wonder if Klemm’s delivers? Ships? I wonder if anyone I know back in Indy would ship me some? This is a damned good beer. Where’s the mustard?
