4.4 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
500ml bottle, at least in my stash for a year, no date found on bottle. I tried to help it head, but I got very little from it...dark chocolate color. Instant smell of char, smoke hits me as I pour the beer. Smoke of a fragrant sort...malt stands behind it. THis doesn’t scream campfire, but so much more....layered with all kinds of subtle nuances...char, ashtray, ham, hickory spice, fruit, roasting beans, chocolate...Luscious aroma. Beer comes through smooth & light in the mouth. Finish is fairly clean with remembrances of a smoke filled maltings. This is one of the smokier of the smoked beers I’ve had recently. But it still has a good beer standing behind that smoke. I lthink this would make a wonderful winter drink, in front of a fire...I find some subtle minty character in there too...This is juicy, robust, and scrumptous...Awesome beer.

500ml brown bottle. A deep red brown pour, creamy beige cap. Nose has smoky ham/meat. Taste has smoky and ham/meaty notes. Light bitterness at the end, then fairly dry. Medium bodied with prickly carbonation. Overall a smooth smoked bock, very pleased to have finally tried the Urbock after years of admiring the Marzen.

2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 10/20
Sorry beer peeps, I just don’t get the smoke beer-thing. Looked nice, a dark brown with a small head. Aroma was a sweet and potent smokiness. I gave it the benefit of the doubt as I really like smoked meats in general. Unfortunately, the smoke flavor was just too much for me. I definitely don’t want it as part of my beer. I get that a lot of people might enjoy these, not me. Looked like a decent beer, mouthfeel was pleasant but that overpowering smokiness was just a killer.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Ruby red colour with minimal head on top. Lots of smoked goodness, sweet caramel and salty tar. Sweet caramel and toffee, then some oak and woody notes and then lots and lots of smoke. Medium body and smallish carbonation. Great smoked beer as always from Schlenkerla.

Like the Märzen, this is a fantastic beer. Slightly more complex and balanced perhaps, the smokiness less in your-face. Full bodied. Like the Märzen: excellent.

Black with a reddish tint, almost no head. Smoked ham, tar, chocolate, caramel. Medium sweetness, very light bitterness. Nice and strong, prefer this to the Märzen.

This one is smoked from Beech Tree wood hence the world famous taste. The Oak smoked version ( green label ) is even more smooth and an absolute wonder in the world of smoked beers.
