Schlenkerla Smokebeer Wheat is an ale with light smoky aroma. As Bavarian wheat beers, it is being brewed with a mixture of both barley malt and wheat malt. The portion of barley malt is hereby a classic Schlenkerla smokemalt, while the wheat malt remains unsmoked. Served unfiltered with its natural haziness, Schlenkerla Wheat reaches its full aroma through bottle fermentation with fine top fermenting yeast.

Bottle from a Getränkemarkt in Bamberg. Ligth smoky smell. Wood smoke and a light touch of smoked ham. Light smoky smell as well, some wheat beer aromas as well but not very powerfull. Easy to drink. I like the level of smoke in this. Could have used more foam banana and so on though.

I was looking forward to this one, having previously tried the very impressive maerzen. Unfortunately I found this beer to be a poor relation. Where the maerzen had a real intruiging aroma of smoky bacon crisps, the smoke here was far less complex, and the taste a bit thinner. This may be due to wheat malt remaining unsmoked in the mix. Much of the typical weizen character was lost and overpowered by the smoke. Still an interesting beer in it’s own right, however the maerzen is the one to go for for a better example of this Bamberg speciality.

Still a good and interesting Weizen.

Look; light beige huge head and hazy orange-brown body. Aroma; tar, fried apricot, grass, peat. Taste; slightly roasted malts, liquorice, grass, peat here and tar where, dark caramel - leading to a herbal smoked finish in peat and grapefruit peels. Smoked texture and normal carbonation. Overall pretty smoked, consequently I couldn’t detect any bananas nor corianders. [50cl brown bottle 5.2%abv BB-10-2015 T@Ferie2015]

Bottle. Amber with one finger head. Mild smoky aroma. Flavor follows, almost a liquid hot dog. Some hefe sweetness underneath. Mild fruity banana. Somehow this works pretty well.

500ml bottle into Weizen glass. Pours with an enormous head that may take many months to settle. Aroma is lightly smoked bbq meat with a malt background. Smells great! Opaque dark brown beer with still towering head. Taste and body are surprisingly light. Finish is sour and smoky, lots of umami. It really does taste like a cross between a Hefe and a Rauchbier. Unusual but not as brilliant as its big brother.

Dark chestnut with a tiny white head, slightly fizzy in the glass. Smells strongly of smoked bacon and a little wheaty. Smoked trout/fish flavours, smoked cheese - very interesting beer.

Bottle. Unclear brown with a medium sized good lasting tan head. Nose has meaty smoke; spegepølse, salmon. The flavour is also focused on the smoke, but that was expected as this is in the Smoked style. Spegepølse, smoked salmon, bonfire, light dark berries, toasted bread, cookie dough, brown sugar, over ripe banana. Medium body, prickling carbonation, filling sweetness, low bitterness, some acidity. Pleasant to drink, but seems less rounded than the other offerings from this brewery, too sweet and fizzy.

16 oz bottle, no date code.
Hazy muddy brown, typical large lasting wheat head, sparse lace. As it should, smoke dominates the aroma, but there is also tobacco, banana, burnt wood.
Flavor is sweetish at first, little bit of banana, then the campfire like smoke, tobacco, wood, a little acidity, Smoke is always there, but it doesn’t get overwhelming. Very nice.
